The Baum Foundation contributes its time and resources to nurture artistic talent, to provide youth with educational opportunities through art and the environment, and to support the conservation and preservation of the planet's biodiversity.

Two of the Board members are related by marriage.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

Form 990 is prepared by an outside tax professional. The form is then reviewed by the organization's management, all members of the board of directors, and the executive director. This group of individuals then discusses the contents of the return with the outside tax professional. After a full review, the final version of the tax return is provided to all members of the organization's voting body. A representative of management authorizes the final form 990 which is then e-filed with the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Members of the board of directors review all potential conflicts of interest atleast annually. The executive director and all board members are required to disclose (in writing) potential conflicts and any related party affiliations. Loans between the organization and members of management and the board are strictly prohibited. The organization seeks full transparency on all relationships. Any potential conflicts (in fact or appearance) are discussed openly and resolved in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: EYAK Preservation CouncilThe Eyak Preservation Council honors Eyak heritage to conserve wild salmon culture and habitat through education, awareness and the promotion of sustainable lifeways for all people.Conservation work began on March 24, 1989, the day of the disastrous Exxon Valdez oil spill to halt clear cutting in the spillzone to protect wild salmon habitat, traditional subsistence culture. The cold storage program began investigative research on subsistence food preservation via cold storage. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Patterns Project $38,699The Patterns Project is bringing the achievements of three volumes of research conducted by Carl Schuster and Ted Carpenter about how patterns connect dating back to the upper paleo lytic period showing how humans are culturally connected through ancient and tribal patterns to be featured in a future exhibit. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Baum Award $10,851The Baum Award for An Emerging American Photographer (Baum Award) completed a retrospective overview of ten winners of the photography award and who were chosen from 500 nominees. The retrospective was shared with 1000 art institutions throughout the United States. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Palmyra Project $7,782Researched continued in preparation for filming so people understand and engage with marine environments which are severely threatened by climate change and human impacts. The expedition planned to use newly developed underwater drone camera to feature coral reef systems under stress as well as those who are standing up to warming waters. Palmyra Atoll is an important place for research of marine conservation as it is a pinnacle example of pristine coral reef. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: FISH COUNT $8,977Youth led research facilitated learning about the Marine Life Protection Action conducted by Marine Applied Research and Exploration to map 10 years of data that supports public learning about setting aside marine protected areas to rebuild habitat. The Fish Count ocean expedition collected deep water data on multiple fish species with submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROV) to compare extensive baseline data taken in 2003 & 2009. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: First Nations Roots and Relations $49,196First nations roots and relations is creating a comprehensive interdisciplinary series of exhibits about canoe culture with programs that engage the public in critical environmental questions around work in habitat and wetland restoration that can lead to abundance and deeper engagement in the history, culture, and indigenous practices. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: SEAMOUNT EXPLORATION EXPEDITION $10,104Research continued on the underwater volcanos named seamount that featured the impacts of deep-sea mining in these sensitive and unprotected geological marine life Ares. Research results were shared via peer reviewed science and on a public blog to help determine the role of conservation around seamounts. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 11: Green Forests Work $54,953Green Forests Work reached a milestone of planting 2 million trees of native and mostly hardwood tree species that are less likely to naturally colonize the site the surfaced mined land sites they plant on including the American chestnut tree which has the potential to be blight-resistant. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 12: Mission Blue $51,445Mission Blue increased the number of special places called Hope Spots that are critical to the health of the ocean and that still need defined protection. Under Dr. Earles leadership he Mission Blue team embarked on a series of expeditions to shed light on these vital ecosystems to safeguard them as marine protected areas. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 13: Desert X $3,775Desert X work featured large scale pieces of over 30 artists from different parts of the world who were invited to make art in response to the unique conditions of the desert around the Coachella valley. The Expedition included filming of the historic events he undertook to understand 500 years of Spanish Conquest. The Journey was retraced in the Amazon along the Napo River.

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: As a nonprofit organization, The Baum Foundation must be able to demonstrate that it "normally" receives at least 33 1/3% of its support from the general public. In calculating this support test, Form 990 Schedule A reflects a support percentage of less than 30%. The Baum Foundation believes that other factors provide sufficient evidence that the organization is a valid publicly supported nonprofit charity. The other test is a facts and circumstances test. Under this test, the organization is treated as publicly supported if it normally receives a substantial part of its support from governmental units, from direct or indirect contributions from the general public, and if it is organized and operated to attract new and additional public or governmental support on a continuous basis [Reg. Section 1.170A-9(e)(3)]. The organization will be treated as normally receiving substantial public support if at least 10 percent of the total support normally received by the organization is governmental or public support [Reg. Section 1.170A-9(e)(3)(i)]. An organization meets the requirement of attracting new and additional public or governmental support if it maintains a continuous and bona fide program for soliciting funds from the general public or it carries on activities designed to attract support from governmental units, churches, educational organizations, or other publicly supported charitable or cultural organizations [Reg. Section 1.170A-9(e)(3)(ii)].The Baum Foundation reflects a cumulative public support test of 28%, which is a temporary dip below the 33.3% threshold as a result of unexpected large gifts from local residents.The Baum Foundation has an active ongoing campaign to secure funds from a variety of third-party sources. The organizations endeavors to solicit funds from foundations and corporate entities. The organization also seeks donations from the general public.The Baum Foundation has a diverse Board of Directors, with representatives from a variety of backgrounds providing guidance, support and foresight.
