Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Other ProgramsDuring the year that ended December 31, 2016, The Baum Foundation provided grants and funds for programs to support creativity in the arts, provide educational tools and opportunities for youth and put programs in place to protect, restore and sustain the environment. The Baum Foundation has worked globally to improve the health of the planet and the human condition by supporting programs that build awareness, shift public attitudes, and expand implementation of sustainable solutions for the environment. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Patterns Project $54,235The Patterns Project launched at Galerie P98a as an art project of mixed media; hand set type, and painting focused on oceans. Works combined words and numbers that served to visualize global mapping coordinates of ocean locations, longitude and latitude speaking to the notion of Where We Are. Images showcased the ocean (hydrosphere) and sky (atmosphere) and trees (biosphere), which together establish humans planetary connection as a species. The project served to visualize the importance of nature and the critical role it plays in our overall well being. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Baum Award $57,831On March 7, 2016, The Baum Foundation and SF Camerawork (SFC) selected Los Angeles-based artist Sun Woods as the recipient of the 2016 Baum Award for an Emerging American Photographer. The Baum Award was one of the first national awards dedicated to recognizing an emerging American photographer and remains one of the largest of its kind in the United States. The national award is given bi-annually to an artist of exceptional talent working in the medium of photography, providing exposure and resources at a critical career-point. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Palmyra Project $51,338In 2015 the 5 Gyres Institute published the first global estimate of 5.25 trillion particles from 269,000 metric tons of plastic floating in all oceans. global circulation is moving small, neutrally-buoyant microplastics around the world. 5 GyresI nstitute collected similar samples in the Canadian Arctic at 72 north, and found abundant microfibers sub-surface. This information is unknown from equatorial regions, like Palmyra Atoll. in addition to the global distribution of fine synthetic particles, there are also marine organisms that are using debris to expand their ranges to new territory via migrations or ocean currents. The sample large fragments of plastic debris from Palmyra will be given to Ed Carpenter at the San Francisco State University to look for colonies of cyanobacteria. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: FISH COUNT $32,782A film crew joined the Fish Count survey of the Channel Islands led by Marine Applied Research and Exploration to discover and determine the degree of success marine protected areas and fishing sites are having in the Channel Islands using scientific measurement to understand how marine ecosystems are reacting to protection from human take. The Fish Count ocean expedition collected deep water data on multiple fish species with submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROV) to compare extensive baseline data taken in 2003 & 2009. Once analyzed the research will reveal outcomes of short/long term marine protection to support the health of critical fisheries in the future. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: First Nations $23,757Converging Rivers is a collaborative program between Native Land Trusts and community members that allows the public to learn about Native peoples longstanding relationships with the natural world, and the dedicated efforts of Native land trusts to protect and restore ancestral lands and waters. Converging Rivers will include a traditional welcome, followed by a presentation from local tribal dancers and singers expressing important relationships within nature. Native land trusts will share the perspectives and work of their organizations. Traditional tribal storytellers, including Gisele, will gift the audience with their engaging stori

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0LEARNING AND EXCHANGEPrograms for the arts, education and the environment are greatly improved through support and engagement with civic organizations, communities, and institutions that strengthen them to be able to provide services otherwise not available through other means. Support for learning, exchange and implementation of solutions allows youth to trade their experiences, people and organizations to implement a solution when trying to solve complex environmental issues and gives aid to communities as they build a sustainable livelihood that helps to improve the quality of life for all.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SEAMOUNT EXPLORATION EXPEDITIONResearch led by Dr. Greg Stone of Conservation Internationals EVP of Science and Oceans on September 2016 was focused on seamounts which are underwater volcanos or mountains. The science team went to 3 seamounts, McCall, Cook and Loihi to explore geological and marine life 3000 feet down on board two submersibles, the Pisces IV and Pisces V, from the Kaimikai-o-Kanaloa support ship. Research results will help determine the role of conservation and planning for seamounts as marine protected areas. The Report is due 2017.
