Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Premises and Buildings - See Schedule OPremises & Buildings: These costs include all of the expenditures associated with the day-to-day operations of the Museum's facilities. Exhibition and permanent galleries displayed a variety of artwork for the public's enjoyment. The galleries, auditoriums, and other Museum spaces enabled volunteer and others to conduct frequent educational programs. The premises and buildings gave ample space for enriching the lives of people, for which the Museum had been internationally recognized.
- Activity 3
- Education Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include:In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot and Create Stations in-gallery activities, art-making, writing and response activities, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. DAM staff also host 25-30 visits a year from national and international colleagues wanting to experience our approaches to in-gallery interpretation. Family Programs: The DAM is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Family Backpacks (kid-sized packs filled with games and learning materials for families to use on their own in the galleries) and Art Tubes (artists' tubes filled with a creative art making project) can be checked out on weekends and school breaks. Discovery Library costume areas, eye spy and other gallery games, as well as the Just for Fun Family Center (a collection and exhibition-based hands-on activity area) and the Kids Corner (a do-it yourself art project space) are always available. Create Playdates! targets 3-5 year olds and their families, helping grown-ups explore the museum with young children through storytelling and art making opportunities. And The Studio is a dedicated workshop for hands-on projects and artist demonstrations inspired by themes found in exhibitions. In 2012, The Paint Studio accompanies paintings exhibitions including Becoming Van Gogh. Adult and College Programs: The DAM offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to discover, explore and make personal connections to collections and exhibitions. Programs range from tours, studio classes, and art history courses to Art and Wine Pairings, Conversation Lounges, and Insider Moments in the galleries. The DAM's Untitled series engages young adults with art and creativity through unconventional, often unexpected encounters with art the last Friday of the month. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. College students from universities throughout the region participate in internship programs that provide insight into museum professions, and work directly with visitors through our Hot Spot program, a series of in-gallery stations with touchable materials that reach an average of 12,000 people each year.School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of DAM's school tour program is our interactive touring approach. Our introductory all-Museum tours, Perception Games and Imagination Games, have been featured at several national conferences, as have the touchable materials and activities we've developed for our culture and architecture based tours. Around 50,000 students visit the museum each year to explore topics related to visual arts, social studies and language arts curricula. Creativity Resource, the Museum's online resource for teachers, uses the creativity of artists to inspire creativity in teachers and students and provides downloadable art images, information, lesson plans and multi-media resources, and curated b

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Exhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections: Each year, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) presents a wide range of world-class exhibitions that provide a variety of experiences with art, attracting more than 600,000 visitors annually. Two themes guided the DAM's 2012 program: celebrating individual artists who have made an extraordinary impact and igniting creativity in the community through programs that provide engaging and interactive experiences with art.The first major exhibition of the artist's work in the United States, Xu Beihong: Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting provided a unique opportunity to share the work of a Chinese national treasure with visitors. The DAM's own stunning collection of Chinese textiles further highlighted China's rich artistic legacy in the accompanying exhibition Threads of Heaven. In the works on paper gallery, Scapes showcases drawings by 16 artists exploring the landscapes, seascapes, even skyscapes and dreamscapes that occupy our imagination. The Photography Department presented Garry Winogrand: Women are Beautiful, a selection of nearly 50 photographs from the museum's permanent collection culled from the hundreds that Garry Winogrand took of women on the street. The March 25, 2012 opening of Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective kicked-off a dynamic five-year exhibition program anchored by high-profile, general interest 'beacon exhibitions.' The exhibition featured more than 200 outfits, taking visitors on a journey through the designer's 40 years of creativity. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, Fashion Studio let visitors try their hand at fashion-related activities and watch some of Denver's own fashion designers at work. Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection debuted in April with its own intriguing look at the power of design through Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's pins, used to make political statements to her counterparts around the globe. And, Colorado design was celebrated in three summer exhibitions: Now Boarding: Fentress Airports + The Architecture of Flight, Design Lab: Three Studios, and Open for Design: A DAM Community Challenge. In 2012, the Western American Art galleries featured the work of two exceptional contemporary artists with Ed Ruscha: On the Road and Theodore Waddell's Abstract Angus. These exhibitions represent two individual artistic responses to the inspiration of the west. Opened in September, El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote To You About Africa has brought together the full spectrum of work by this acclaimed artist. A native of Ghana and resident of Nigeria, Anatsui gained international attention a dozen years ago for his dazzling metal wall sculptures created from thousands of found Nigerian liquor-bottle tops. |
