Major Activities

Activity 2
Premises and Buildings - See Schedule OPremises & Buildings: These costs include all of the expenditures associated with the day-to-day operations of the Museum's facilities. Exhibition and permanent galleries displayed a variety of artwork for the public's enjoyment. The galleries, auditoriums, and other Museum spaces enabled volunteers and others to conduct frequent educational programs. The premises and buildings gave ample space for enriching the lives of people, for which the Museum has been internationally recognized.
Activity 3
Education Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include: In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot in-gallery activity stations, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. Family Programs: The Denver Art Museum is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Adult Programs: Adult programs include tours, studio classes, courses, and workshops. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of the Museum's school program is an interactive touring approach that incorporates object-oriented learning and art-making activities. Roughly 40,000 students visit the museum each year, and over 4,000 participate with art-making tours. The Denver Art Museum also offers Creativity Resource, a web site that provides teachers with free standards-based resources for bringing creativity and cultural literacy into their classrooms. Community Partnerships: The Denver Art Museum has focused community outreach efforts to break down barriers to family participation such as a lack of transportation, or lack of awareness of the Museum's family programs. Programs include Community Access Tours that familiarize new visitors with Museum offerings, and visits to community organizations to provide art activities, family passes, and information about the Museum. By focusing on outreach, the Museum is strengthening ties to the community and welcoming ethnically and economically diverse family audiences. Overall, education programs both onsite and online served more than 300,000 people in 2010.

IRS990/Description0Exhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections:Over the past year, the Museum hosted world-class exhibitions and collections, beginning with Embrace!, a DAM-organized exhibition of installed works by 17 international contemporary artists. Each of the artists selected locations within the Museum's Hamilton Building, and created an artwork that responded to or otherwise "embraced" the space. The exhibition celebrated the unique architecture and the way art interacts with the building in those spaces. A suite of western American painting exhibitions began with Allen True's West, examining True's work as Colorado's premier native-born artist of the early 20th century. Charles M. Russell: Masterworks in Oil and Bronze brought together signature paintings and sculptures from all phases of the renowned artist's career. The exhibition Charles Deas and 1840s America highlighted twelve of the artist's most important paintings, many of which were seen together for the first time. These exhibitions highlighted the Museum's own expansive collections and provided visitors with a rich exploration of 19th-century American art of the west. In the modern and contemporary works on paper gallery, examples of portraiture from the sixteenth century to the present were on display in Face to Face. This exhibition explored the many ways artists approach portraiture. In April, the Museum debuted the new permanent photography gallery with an exhibition of highlights from the collection. The inaugural exhibition provided a first-ever glimpse of the breadth and quality of photography at the Museum. In July, the Museum opened Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, a major touring exhibition showcasing over 100 pieces from the tomb of King Tut and other ancient sites representing 2,000 years of Egyptian history. The exhibition follows a storyline that explores the splendor of the pharaohs, their function in the earthly and divine worlds, and what "kingship" meant to the Egyptian people. Visitors viewed artifacts from some of the most powerful Egyptian rulers, including Khefren, whose great pyramid is the only remaining structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Psusennes I, whose magnificent golden death mask was included in the display. Museum hours were extended to accommodate the large number of visitors.
