Major Activities

Activity 2
Premises and Buildings - See Schedule OPremises & Buildings: These costs include all of the expenditures associated with the day-to-day operations of the Museum's facilities. Exhibition and permanent galleries displayed a variety of artwork for the public's enjoyment. The galleries, auditoriums, and other Museum spaces enabled volunteers and others to conduct frequent educational programs. The premises and buildings gave ample space for enriching the lives of people, for which the Museum has been internationally recognized.
Activity 3
Education Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include:In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot in-gallery activity stations, art-making, writing and response activities, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. The Museum staff also host 25-30 visits a year from national and international colleagues wanting to experience our approaches to in-gallery interpretation. Family Programs: The Museum is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Family Backpacks (kid-sized packs filled with games and learning materials for families to use on their own in the galleries) and Art Tubes (artist's tubes filled with an art making activity) can be checked out on weekends and school breaks. Discovery Library costume areas, eye spy and other gallery games, as well as the Just for Fun Family Centers (collection and exhibition-based, hands-on activity areas) and the Kids Corner (a do-it yourself art project area) are always available. Create Playdates! targets 3-5 year olds and their families, helping grown-ups explore the museum with young children through storytelling and art making opportunities.Adult and College Programs: The Museum offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to discover, explore and make personal connections to collections and exhibitions. Programs range from tours, studio classes, and art history courses to Art and Wine Pairings, Conversation Lounges, and Insider Moments in the galleries. The Museum's Untitled series engages young adults with art and creativity through unconventional, often unexpected encounters with art the last Friday of the month. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. College students from universities throughout the region participate in internship programs that provide insight into museum professions, and work directly with visitors through our Hot Spot program, a series of in-gallery stations with touchable materials that reach an average of 12,000 people each year.School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of the Museum's school tour program is our interactive touring approach. Our introductory all-museum tours, Perception Games and Imagination Games, have been featured at several national conferences, as have the touchable materials and activities we've developed for our culture and architecture based tours. Roughly 40,000 students visit the museum each year to explore topics related to visual arts, social studies and language arts curricula. Creativity Resource, the museum's online resource for teachers, uses the creativity of artists to inspire creativity in teachers and students and provides downloadable art images, information, lesson plans and resources, and curated blogs on cultural and creativity topics. The Museum provides professional development for teachers on-site and on-line through workshops and in-services custom-designed to meet the needs of individual school districts, and webi

IRS990/Description0Exhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections: Each year, the Denver Art Museum presents a wide range of world-class exhibitions that provide a variety of experiences with art for our visitors. During 2011, the Museum continued Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, a major touring exhibition showcasing over 100 pieces from the tomb of King Tut and other ancient sites representing 2,000 years of Egyptian history. The exhibition followed a storyline that explored the splendor of the pharaohs, their function in the earthly and divine worlds, and what "kingship" meant to the Egyptian people. Visitors viewed artifacts from some of the most powerful Egyptian rulers, including Khefren, whose great pyramid is the only remaining structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Psusennes I, whose magnificent golden death mask was included in the display. Museum hours were extended to accommodate the large number of visitors. After the close of King Tut, the Museum presented a varied exhibition program in 2011 that, in combination with permanent collections and education programs, drew 669,000 visitors. In the works on paper gallery, black-and-white drawings by German artist Marc Brandenburg explored the tension between light and dark in Marc Brandenburg: Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, the artist's first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. The Photography Department presented Robert Benjamin: Notes from a Quiet Life, a collection of photos by this under-recognized Colorado artist. Watching Me Watching You brought together a group of unusual drawings that defy easy categorization and left visitors intrigued and delighted. In spring, the Museum presented Blink! Light, Sound & the Moving Image, an exhibition of variable media and technology-based artworks drawn primarily from a private collection and the Museum's own holdings. This exhibition explored how technology-based art relates to the human spirit through narrative, performance, music, humor, social and political issues, nostalgia, and the purely sensory. As a counterpoint to the modern technology of Blink!, Cities of Splendor: A Journey Through Renaissance Italy carried visitors on a sumptuous journey through Renaissance Italy. Paintings, tapestries, and sculptures combined with artfully designed galleries illustrated the distinct stylistic and creative contributions that emerged from the regions of 15th and 16th century Italy. The year's highlight was the museum-wide celebration of a single medium, Marvelous Mud. A first for the Museum, this suite of exhibitions and programs highlighted the varied uses for a common medium, clay. Because clay is used throughout history and in every culture, this experience drew from collections in every curatorial department. In the Asian art department, for example, Blue and White showed how different cultures adopted and adapted the very simple yet compelling combination of blue and white in ceramics. Overthrown: Clay Without Limits explored the ways that contemporary artists are still using this medium today in installation artworks that defy expectations about how clay is used in art. Marajo: Ancient Ceramics from the Mouth of the Amazon focused on the elaborately decorated red, white, and black earthenware ceramics from the people who occupied the Brazilian island of Marajo from A.D. 400 to 1300. Marajo was the first exhibition devoted to this topic in the United States.
