Major Activities

Activity 2
Premises and Buildings - See Schedule OPremises & Buildings: These costs include all expenditures associated with the day-to-day operations of the Museum's facilities. Exhibition and permanent galleries displayed a variety of artwork for the public's enjoyment. The Museum's public spaces enable volunteers and others to conduct frequent educational programs such as tours, public talks, interpretive programs, and more. The premises and buildings provide ample space for mission-driven programming aimed at enriching the lives of this and future generations, and for which the Museum has been internationally recognized.
Activity 3
Education Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include:In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot and Create Stations in-gallery activities, art-making, Drop In Drawing and Drop In Writing, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. DAM staff also host 25-30 visits a year from national and international colleagues seeking to learn from our approaches to in-gallery interpretationFamily Programs: The DAM is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Family Backpacks (kid-sized packs filled with games and learning materials for families to use on their own in the galleries) and Art Tubes (artists' tubes filled with a creative art making project) can be checked out on weekends and school breaks. Discovery Library costume areas, eye spy and other gallery games, as well as the Just for Fun Family Center (a collection and exhibition-based hands-on activity area) and the Kids Corner (a do-it yourself art project space) are always available. Create Playdates! targets 3-5 year olds and their families, helping grown-ups explore the Museum with young children through storytelling and art making opportunities. And The Studio is a dedicated workshop for hands-on projects and artist demonstrations inspired by themes found in exhibitions. In 2013, The Quilt Studio accompanied Spun: Adventures in Textiles, a Museum-wide exploration of textiles across collections. Adult and College Programs: The DAM offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to discover, explore and make personal connections to collections and exhibitions. Programs range from tours, studio classes, and art history courses to Art and Wine Pairings, Conversation Lounges, and Insider Moments in the galleries. The DAM's Untitled series engages young adults with art and creativity through unconventional, often unexpected encounters with art the last Friday of the month. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important.School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of DAM's school tour program is our interactive touring approach. Our introductory all-Museum tours, Perception Games and Imagination Games, have been featured at several national conferences, as have the touchable materials and activities we've developed for our culture and architecture based tours. Around 50,000 students visit the Museum each year to explore topics related to visual arts, social studies and language arts curricula. Creativity Resource, the Museum's online resource for teachers, uses the creativity of artists to inspire creativity in teachers and students and provides downloadable art images, information, lesson plans and multi-media resources, and curated blogs on cultural and creativity topics. The DAM provides professional development for teachers on-site and on-line through workshops, webinars, and in-services custom-designed to meet the needs of individual school districts.Community Partnerships: The education depar

IRS990/Description0Exhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections: Each year, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) presents a wide range of world-class exhibitions that provide a variety of experiences with art, attracting more than 800,000 visitors annually. The Museum's approach to exhibitions celebrates the creativity of individual artists who have made an extraordinary impact and ignites the creativity in the community through programs that provide engaging and interactive experiences with art. The Museum's expansive exhibition calendar featured explorations of painting, photography, and a wide-ranging look at textiles across cultures and throughout history that in 2013 broke records for attendance with more than 800,000 visitors. Some exhibition highlights in 2013: Becoming Van Gogh featured an in-depth exploration of Vincent Van Gogh's unconventional path to becoming one of the world's most recognizable artists. It examined critical steps in his artistic evolution through more than 70 paintings and drawings by Van Gogh. Loans from more than 60 public and private collections throughout Europe and North America told the story of a number of key formative periods throughout the artist's career. Denver was the only venue for this exhibition which drew more than 250,000 visitors during its three month run. Laura Letinsky: Still Life Photographs, 19972012 presented still life photographs that evolved from studies in melancholy and absence, revealing subtle, yet surprising, explorations of perception, color and space. This survey exhibition traced the artist's work from the late 1990s until today.Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam, and the Land, brought to light a relatively unknown aspect of O'Keeffe's art and thinking-her deep respect for the diverse and distinctive cultures of northern New Mexico.Rocky Mountain Majesty: The Paintings of Charles Partridge Adams highlighted the work of the landscape artist known for his paintings of Longs Peak near Estes Park and other mountain ranges in Colorado. The DAM exhibited 33 of the very best of his oil and watercolor paintings depicting Colorado and showed the diversity of Adams' oeuvre, which includes such styles as realism, tonalism and impressionism.Taking visitors on a journey through the artist's imagination, Nick Cave: Sojourn featured approximately 40 new artworks including more than 20 new Soundsuits. Cave's multi-sensory, immersive installation transported visitors to a magical world of color, texture, sound, and movement. The Museum took a wide-ranging look at textiles from pre-Columbian weavings to Navajo blankets to an examination of clothing in art and photography in the campus-wide exhibition Spun: Adventures in Textiles. The exhibitions featured special in-gallery moments like a stunning seventeenth-century painting by the Master of the Blue Jeans and Flash of Red, Glint of Gold: Woven Riches of South America, which showcased vivid, multidimensional works created by South American artists in workshops separated by hundreds of miles and more than five centuries of history. Spun is one of the museum's innovative approaches to exhibitions that explores collections across the Museum through a single theme or medium. Figure to Field: Mark Rothko in the 1940s traced the development of Rothko's work during the most critical decade of his career. In the early '40s, Rothko rejected realism and began a series of abstract works meant to evoke classical myth; in the late '40s he created his first color field paintings, the works on which his stature as one of the most famous American painters of the post-war period rests.
