FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Akron soul train (ast) is a startup arts organization that was formed as a result of being awarded a 2015 knight arts challenge award in march 2016. In 2017 ast used volunteers in three main areas; governance, fundraising and community outreach.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

The ast board is comprised of all volunteers. The board meets on a bimonthly basis. Meetings are normally 90 minutes long. Board volunteers are a cross section of the arts community in akron, ohio. Each member brings a plethora of experience and insight into the operations and governance of a startup nonprofit arts organization. The board is comprised of 10 members. A total of 6 board meetings were held in 2017. Total number of volunteer hours was approximately 3,500 which included meeting time, preparation for meeting, community outreach events and fundraising events. In addition to governance, board members have also been active in fundraising and community outreach. Ast held several events in 2017. Board members attended these events and assisted with explaining in ast's mission, its goals, anticipated outcomes, and impact on akron ohio. Ast's board members are well known and respected in the summit county area. By volunteering their time and talent, as well as donating their treasure, the ast board has lent an air of credibility to such a new nonprofit enterprise. This has held ast in good stead with potential funders, members, and volunteers, as well as assuring success. In addition to the board, a small number of community volunteers assisted with the events ast held in 2017. One was a buzz event which was used to raise awareness of the organization, spur the purchasing of memberships, learn about upcoming artistic opportunities with ast, and allow interested parties to sign up to volunteer. This event lasted for 4 hours. In addition, ast hosted booths at four community arts festivals. Volunteers assisted with setup, explaining what akron soul train is and will be, and tear down. Akron arts expo ran for 2 days for 8 hours each day, wooffest ran for 5 hours, porchrokr ran for 5 hours, and high arts opening night festival ran for 4 hours. The final event of the year was winter soulstice held on december 9, 2017 at summit artspace. This event exhibited the works of our four fall fellows; michelle droll, jenniffer omaitz, stephen tomasko, and danny volk. The event lasted 5 hours and involved the help of 6 community volunteers in addition to ast board members. Board members and community volunteers worked during the event in various capacities, including explaining ast's mission, its organizational goals, anticipated outcomes, and impact on akron, ohio. There were approximately 10 volunteers volunteering over the course of the day for a total of 50 volunteer hours. Also, board members and community volunteers assisted with cleaning the exhibition space, setting up the space, and tearing it down which took approximately 10 hours with a total of 5 volunteers for a total of 50 hours. Over the course of 2017, akron soul train used 15 volunteers for approximately 3,750 hours of volunteer time.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Akron soul train continues to work toward identifying a permanent location where we will provide our fellows with a studio space, a gallery for an exhibition of their work at the end of their fellowship and a performance/workshops space for the education aspect of their time with ast. Ast accomplished this portion of its mission through detailed building plans through architect, gpd and the purchase of land from the city of akron. Ast acquired land from the city of akron in september 2017. Ast successfully collaborated with a number of local organizations including summit artspace, summit metroparks, akron art museum, downtown akron partnership, and compass coffee.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america requires the organization to report information regarding its exposure to various tax positions taken by the organization. The organization has determined whether any tax positions have met the recognition threshold and has measured the organization's exposure to those tax positions. Management believes that the organization has adequately addressed all relevant tax positions and that there are no unrecorded tax liabilities. Federal and state tax authorities generally have the right to examine and audit the previous three years of tax returns filed. If incurred, the agency records tax related penalties and interest as administrative costs in the accompanying statements of activities and functional expenses. However, the organization incurred no tax related penalties or interest in 2017 or 2016.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE PREPARATION OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS IN CONFORMITY WITH ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES GENERALLY ACCEPTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA REQUIRES THE ORGANIZATION TO REPORT INFORMATION REGARDING ITS EXPOSURE TO VARIOUS TAX POSITIONS TAKEN BY THE ORGANIZATION.
