FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

1.to build and maintain a residential artists' village near the historic ohio and erie canal towpath trail in akron, ohio using refurbished shipping containers, railroad cars, and tiny houses. 2.to grant fellowships to deserving artists in any medium. Akron soul train (ast) is a startup arts organization that was formed as a result of being awarded a 2015 knight arts challenge award in march of 2016. In 2016 ast used volunteers in three main areas; governance, fundraising, and community outreach. The ast board of director's is comprised of all volunteers. The board meets on a bimonthly basis. Meetings are normally 90 minutes long. Board volunteers are a cross section of the arts community in akron ohio. Each member brings a plethora of experience and insight into the operations and governance of a startup nonprofit arts organization. The board is comprised of 7 members. The initial board meeting was held in may of 2016, and a total of five meetings were held in 2016. Total number of volunteer hours was approximately 3,000 which included meeting time and preparation for meetings. In addition to governance, board members have also been active in fundraising and community outreach. Ast held several events in 2016. Board members attended these events and assisted with explaining ast's mission, its organizational goals, anticipated outcomes, and impact on akron ohio. Ast's board members are very well known and respected in the summit county area. By volunteering their time and talent, as well as donating their treasure, the ast board has lent an air of credibility to such a new nonprofit enterprise. This has held ast in good stead with potential funders, members, and volunteers, as well as assuring success. In addition to the board, a small number of community volunteers assisted with the six days of events ast held in 2016. One was a buzz event which was used to raise awareness of the organization, spur the purchasing of memberships, learn about upcoming artistic opportunities with ast, and allow interested parties to sign up to volunteer. This event lasted for 5 hours. There were two other events in 2016 that involved hosting a booth at local arts festivals near highland square in akron, ohio. Volunteers assisted with setup, explaining what akron soul train is and will be, and tear down. These festivals ran for 8 hours each. These three events used approximately 8 volunteers for a total of 62 hours of volunteer time. The final three days of events were akron soul train's first fellow artist exhibition, featuring john sokol. An opening night reception was held for members and the board which was a three-hour long event. Then over the next two days the exhibition was open to the public for a total of 10 hours. Board members and community volunteers worked during all three days of this event in various capacities, including, explaining ast's mission, its organizational goals, anticipated outcomes, and impact on akron ohio. There were approximately 5 individuals volunteering over the three days for a total number of 65 volunteer hours. Also, board members and community volunteers assisted with cleaning the exhibition space, setting up the space, and tearing it down which took approximately 40 hours with 4 volunteers for a total of 160 hours. Over the course of 2016, akron soul train used a dozen volunteers for approximately 3,280 hours of volunteer time.

Mayor of akron and the economic development committee to acquire land for the village as well as site improvement funding from the city. The meeting went well and it is anticipated full approval of the request will occur. Ast has been working continuously on collaboration with many entities, including the city and county, other knight arts winners, downtown akron partnership, many arts organizations and businesses. These short-term collaborations will be essential to the long-term success of ast.

Competition. "in the summer of cancer," a full collection of his poetry, and "the problem with relativity" (short stories) are his latest books. Mr. Sokol created 30 works of art over his 30-day fellowship in september 2016. Mr. Sokol worked out of his home studio since the residential artist village is not complete. A very successful three-day exhibition of his work was held in november of 2016. The exhibition was attended by approximately 300 people over the three days and approximately 12,000 worth of art was sold. In addition, a very successful video of mr. Sokol's artistic technique was filmed for the video blog, the akronist. The video received over 24,000 hits, an all time high for the blog. Mr. Sokol has stated emphatically that the exposure afforded him by the akron soul train fellowship has expanded his audience and contributed to an increasd interest in his art and his unique painting techniques.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

On the community. -ast hosted a buzz event in august that again included an educational and community outreach component. Mark mothersbaugh, the world-renowned artist and musician as well as an ast board member, attended and spent the evening speaking with community members about art and music. It was a resounding success with over 300 people attending. -in november of 2016, ast hosted a very successful three-day exhibition of its first fellow's (john sokol), art. The exhibition was attended by approximately 300 people over the three days and approximately 12,000 worth of art was sold. In addition, a very successful video of mr. Sokol's artistic technique was filmed for the video blog, the akronist. The video received over 24,000 hits, an all time high for the blog.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america requires the organization to report information regarding its exposure to various tax positions taken by the organization. The organization has determined whether any tax positions have met the recognition threshold and has measured the organization's exposure to those tax positions. Management believes that the organization has adequately addressed all relevant tax positions and that there are no unrecorded tax liabilities. Federal and state tax authorities generally have the right to examine and audit the previous three years of tax returns filed. If incurred, the agency records tax related penalties and interest as administrative costs in the accompanying statements of activities and functional expenses. However, the organization incurred no tax related penalties or interest in 2016.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE PREPARATION OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS IN CONFORMITY WITH ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES GENERALLY ACCEPTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA REQUIRES THE ORGANIZATION TO REPORT INFORMATION REGARDING ITS EXPOSURE TO VARIOUS TAX POSITIONS TAKEN BY THE ORGANIZATION.
