IRS990/Desc0Forest Conservation and Stewardship By the end of 2017, PFT served as a grantee, monitoring and providing stewardship services on a total of 29 conservation easements on 101,185 acres in California and Oregon. PFT owns and manages 897 forested acres along the border of Yosemite National Park, as well as 540 acres of mixed evergreen forestland on the Outlet Creek Ranch in Mendocino County, California. These lands are conserved, managed and monitored for water, wildlife, and climate values. In 2017, PFT acquired a working forest conservation easement from Mountcrest Forest LLC that protects 1771 acres in southern Oregon. The conservation easement complements PFTs 2017 acquisition from Mountcrest of 314 acres now added to the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument, the nation's first national monument dedicated to protecting biodiversity. These acquisitions were funded by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, granted through The Nature Conservancy as part of efforts to identify and protect Pacific Northwest lands that will provide resiliency in the face of climate change, and the Pacific Crest Trail Association. Mountcrest Forest LLC also made a very generous donation of more than a quarter of the value of the conservation easement. This is the first time that Oregon public agencies have funded a conservation easement held by a non-profit land trust that both ensures sustainable timber harvest and protects significant habitat for threatened and endangered species. With the success of the Mountcrest project and increasing interest in PFTs work in Oregon, we are opening a Portland office in 2018 to better collaborate with our Oregon stakeholders to expand the conservation of privately owned working forests. PFT is partnering with the family-owned Michigan-California Timber Company to conserve 5,006 forest acres within the iconic volcanic landscape of northern California. Extending from the northern slope of the Black Butte lava domes, this forest extends toward Mount Shastas Diller Canyon. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest surrounds the property on three sides, while the City of Weed and Interstate 5 form its western edge. This project received a major grant from the California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protections Forest Legacy Program in 2017 which will fund PFTs acquisition of this important conservation easement in late 2018, making lasting connections for wildlife and water, while protecting jobs in the woods and revitalizing recreational opportunities. PFT continues to work with a diverse group of stakeholders on the Klamath-Cascade Advisory Council, as well as conducting field trips and public outreach and educating key stakeholders about the importance of conserving working forests in the Klamath-Cascade region. Forests are central to the ecological health of this critical watershed that provides drinking water for 25+ million Californians. Klamath-Cascade Advisory Council meetings in 2017 focused on the role of fire as an ecological process and the need to increase both prescribed burns and managed fire in the region.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Policy InitiativesThe Pacific Forest Trust provides technical advice to policymakers, advocates for incentive-based policy initiatives and leads diverse stakeholder groups in support of the conservation and stewardship of working forests and ranchlands.Healthy Watersheds: PFT continued efforts to develop a new source of funding for the conservation and restoration of Californias source watersheds through public recognition of their critical role as green infrastructure in the states complex water system. As infrastructure, the work needed to improve watershed functions could be funded through the same sort of financing approach often applied to develop major transportation infrastructure projects. In 2017, PFT published a comprehensive assessment of the conditions and restoration needs of the five source watersheds that deliver water to the Shasta and Oroville reservoirs, Californias two largest reservoirs and the core of the states water supply. Climate Planning: PFT continues to participate in planning efforts related to Californias ongoing efforts to encourage carbon sequestration through management of natural and working lands. In 2017, PFT provided technical input to the Oregon and Washington legislatures in connection with their efforts to adopt legislation that would recognize and support forest conservation and restoration/resilience management as tools for reducing greenhouse gases.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0CONSTITUENCY BUILDING and General ProgramThe Pacific Forest Trust builds awareness of the vital contributions that privately owned and productive U.S. forests make to the public good: wood, water, wildlife, and a healthy climate. PFTs Constituency Building program raises the profile of these benefits in addition to generating support for the organization's initiatives and programs through events, publications, online communications, and targeted outreach to key stakeholders.
