Financial Statement Notes

Part II, Line 5: Summarized Policy

All easements have to have Stewardship monitoring plan written and approved prior to the close of an easement and upon closing the transaction a specific amount of money calculated based on various criteria is deposited into Stewardship Fund, of which investment earnings are used to pay for easement monitoring and any easement defense costs

Part II, Line 9: Organization Reporting of conservation easements.

Organization's balance sheet shows the value of the land at cost; direct expenses are included in program expenses.footnote in financial statements: the corporation holds parcels of land which were both purchased with contributed funds and received as contributions. The parcels' total value is $2,000,000. The corporation held 27 conservation easements located in california and oregon comprising 85,770 acres at the end of 2015. IRS990/Desc0Forest Conservation and Stewardship By the end of 2015, PFT served as a grantee, monitoring and providing stewardship services on a total of 27 conservation easements on 85,770 acres in California and Oregon. PFT owns and manages 897 forested acres along the border of Yosemite National Park, as well as 540 acres of mixed evergreen forestland on the Outlet Creek Ranch in Mendocino County, California. These lands are conserved and monitored for water, wildlife, and climate values. In 2015, PFT worked with its landowner, government agency, and local community conservation partners toward conserving an additional 3,468 acres in California. With signed option agreements, PFT is also working to secure the lasting conservation of four ecologically rich properties totaling 20,327 acres in the Klamath-Cascade region, home to world class biodiversity and a critical source of water supplies. The organization was awarded over $3.4 million in funding this year toward these efforts. In June, PFT was granted a Working Forest Conservation Easement by the family that owns Butte Creek Meadows. This 3,468 acre property secures a natural corridor between the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the Klamath National Forest on the slopes of Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County, California. We were able to acquire the easement thanks to a generous gift from the landowners in addition to grant funding from the Wildlife Conservation Boards Forest Conservation Program and the California Natural Resource Agencys Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program. Management by the owners under the terms of the conservation easement and on-going stewardship by PFT will enhance habitat for hundreds of species including imperiled animals such as the northern spotted owl and Pacific fisher, while protecting important sources of water in the heart of the Klamath-Cascade region.PFT is partnering with the family-owned Michigan-California Timber Company to conserve 5,006 forest acres within the iconic volcanic landscape of northern California. Extending from the northern slope of the Black Butte lava domes, this forest extends toward Mount Shastas Diller Canyon. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest surrounds the property on three sides, while the City of Weed and Interstate 5 form its western edge. Now under option, this project will make lasting connections for wildlife and water, while protecting jobs in the woods, and revitalizing recreational opportunities. PFT is expanding its conservation corridor of working lands along the southern edge of the Sierra Valley in partnership with the Martinetti family. Also under option, PFT is seeking to establish a conservation easement on their 610 acre ranch. The Martinetti family has worked these lands for the last 100 years, raising cattle at the headwaters of the Feather River. We aim to protect the areas natural and working heritage together with these dedicated landowners. Conservation of the Martinetti Ranch secures a significant piece the Sierra Valley, part of the largest alpine wetlands in North America and a major stop on the Pacific Flyway for 260 species of birds. Beginning with the Valley View property in 1998, this will be our 6th conservation project in the areacumulatively protecting over 15 square miles of forests and meadows.PFT continues to work with a diverse group of stakeholders on the Klamath-Cascade Advisory Council, as well as conducting field trips and public outreach and educating key stakeholders about the importance of conserving working forests in the Klamath-Cascade region. Forests are central to the ecological health of this critical watershed that provides drinking water for 25+ million Californians. Klamath-Cascade Advisory Council meetings in 2015 focused on restoration and conservation of forests in Californias headwaters. Council advisory members also met with key policy-makers in Sacramento, California to raise awareness for the importance the Klamath-Cascade and its source watersheds.PFT continue

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0CONSTITUENCY BUILDING and General ProgramThe Pacific Forest Trust builds awareness of the vital contributions that privately owned and productive U.S. forests make to the public good: wood, water, wildlife, and a healthy climate. PFTs Constituency Building program raises the profile of these benefits in addition to generating support for the organizations initiatives and programs through events, publications, online communications, and targeted outreach to key stakeholders. PFT offered its expertise to the media and was covered or quoted in numerous stories on forests and climate, forest conservation, and policy improvements to state and federal forest conservation programs. PFT also released four print publications in 2015 including the ForestLife magazine, 2014 Annual Report, and two issues of the LEAFLET newsletter. PFT engaged more than 6,000 readers in print and thousands more with the online content including blog posts, emails to online subscribers, and social media content. Print and online content featured forest facts, expert interviews, landowner profiles, and stories from our conservation project siteseducating readers about forest watersheds health, wildlife, and policies.PFT conducted workshops and presentations for universities, conferences, agencies and organizations, as well as the public. We held events that brought diverse industries and stakeholders together, including tours of the Butte Creek Meadows Working Forest Conservation Project and the Mountcrest Forest, currently in process toward becoming a conservation easement. Our annual gala, Forest Fete, brought landowners together with legislators, forestry experts, students, scientists, educators, and philanthropists. This years Forest Fete featured keynote speaker, Chuck Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Director Bonham spoke about the incredible wildlife species diversity found in California and how the drought is making life difficult for many endangered species. In November, PFT launched an entirely new website, complete with fresh content and visuals in a responsive, flexible design. With this new platform and design, we now present PFTs vision, strategies, and accomplishments in a way that is both easier to navigate and more visually compelling. In addition to new content and photos, the site is now responsive to mobile devices, equipped with enhanced analytics tracking, and synced with Webmaster tools that will aid our efforts to improve search engine optimization.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Policy Initiatives The Pacific Forest Trust provides technical advice to policymakers, advocates for incentive-based policy initiatives and leads diverse stakeholder groups in support of the conservation and stewardship of working forests and ranchlands.Healthy Watersheds: PFT continued efforts to develop a new source of funding for the conservation and restoration of Californias source watersheds through public recognition of their critical role as green infrastructure in the states complex water system. As infrastructure, the work needed to improve watershed functions could be funded through the same sort of financing approach often applied to develop major transportation infrastructure projects. In 2015, PFT prepared both ecological and economic models to analyze potential costs and benefits of the Healthy Watersheds California project. Our geo-spatial analysis identified specific needs for restoration and conservation in northern Californias key source watersheds across public and private landownerships.Climate Change: The Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 marked a historic turning point in the fight against climate change. Now, not only is this fight a global priority, forests are recognized essential to solve the climate crisis, offsetting emissions, protecting water supplies, providing refuge for species adapting changing conditions, and sustaining rural economies. Prominent in Paris were the contributions and examples of real action by individual cities and states, most notably, California. This state was the first in the world to include forests in their groundbreaking climate policy (AB 32) and the first to develop regulatory-grade forest carbon offsets. PFT led these efforts and established the first such offset project in the van Eck Forest. Forest carbon offsets, funded through a newly energized global carbon market, will play an important role in meeting both company and country carbon commitments. The California program was on full display in Paris and recognized as the model for carbon markets, globally. Drought Crisis: Years of drought combined with resulting bark beetle infestations and other factors have increased tree mortality throughout the region. In 2015, PFT joined the Tree Mortality Task Force comprised of state and federal agencies, local governments, utilities, and various stakeholders in order to coordinate emergency protective actions, and monitor ongoing conditions.
