FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Mission: to cultivate the next generation of urban conservationists in richmond, virginia. Vision: groundwork rva works with richmond youth to increase environmental, economic, and social well-being in neighborhoods by transforming blighted and neglected open spaces into vibrant public assets. Groundwork rva seeks four tangible results, which are deeply interrelated; success in one of these factors leverages success in the other three. 1. Youth are prepared for success. Groundwork rva helps youth prepare for educational and/or career success by designing, interpreting, building, and maintaining richmond's green network. Youth leave our programs with knowledge and job skills that will serve them. Some will successfully enter the green workforce, and over time, move into new or advanced roles. Some will go to college, and over time, may find work in conservation, environmental science, or a related field. 2. Racial equity. Groundwork rva promotes racial equity and social justice by cultivating the participation of black and brown youth leaders in conservation, recreation and the civic life of richmond. Our work centers people who have typically been marginalized or excluded from environmental benefits and forced instead to live with environmental harms from pollution, toxins, climate change impacts, and lack of green space in their neighborhoods. 3. A greener richmond. Groundwork rva collaborates with public and private partners to maintain and expand access to richmond's network of green spaces and sustainable infrastructure; enhance the health of the james river and urban tributaries; and address the impacts of climate change and environmental neglect in richmond's impacted neighborhoods. We're making our city landscape a healthier, more resilient urban environment for all its residents. 4. Improved health and quality of life for all residents. Groundwork rva works with richmond youth to advocate for better quality of life and improved health for all richmond residents. Young leaders expand awareness of environmental impacts on community life and help neighbors have voice in creating equitable solutions. From increased bicycle, pedestrian, and transit accessible recreational spaces and jobs to the installation of urban gardens and greenways, our work helps improve the social determinants needed for health and wellness.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Green team through hands-on, people-to-people community engagement, groundwork rva's green team is helping teens innovate important strategies to support resilience and health in the city of richmond. 2022 saw groundwork rva bring back full-scale, in-person activity in our community programming as well as in our national park service immersion program. 8 green team members were able to travel to yellowstone national park, including 2 sisters who were returning as alums and youth leaders. Green teamers also continued their service-learning work locally at shenadoah national park on two different trips. A highlight for 2022 was green team's continued work on urban agriculture and learning how to grow their own food at the hillside mini farm. This was the second growing season and the farm produced over 3,000 pounds of food that was distributed to the community. An important partner in this effort was happily natural day and virginia commonwealth university's institute for contemporary art. The green team served over 40 youth in 2022.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Green workforce in 2022, groundwork rva's green workforce was a full-year, workplace-based workforce training program. Green workforce provided over 6,000 hours of paid work to richmond young adults the youth continued building their skills and training in the safe use of tools and equipment, while learning valuable leadership, critical thinking and project planning and management skills. Green workforce teens designed and installed over 2,500 square feet of permeable pathways in community gardens and other facilities around the city, to help manage storm water run-off and improve the health of the james river. These young people - showed up every day, collaborated in designing the day's and week's tasks, drove to sites, loaded and unloaded the necessary tools and equipment, used those tools and equipment safely to build, install or maintain elements of the built environment and often managed the volunteers who came to help. Through the green workforce, groundwork rva helped prepare youth for careers in carpentry and building trades, landscaping and green infrastructure as well as created opportunities for teens to build skills in financial management. The green workforce worked on 17 different sites in 2022.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Bellemeade community bike shop the bellemeade community bike shop is a program of groundwork rva that began in 2018 with the goal to bring more access to biking and biking resources, education, and opportunities to the black and brown youth of richmond's southside communities. What started out with the goal of mainly getting youth on bikes has grown into a multi-faceted program that offers youth opportunities to volunteer in their community to earn a bike, participate in bike trips and activities, and have access to free bike repairs, where they also get hands-on instruction on how to fix their own bike. In 2022 the bike shop continued and expanded it's camp spokes program, targeted specifically at young women and gender-nonconforming youth. Experience had shown that these youth really benefitted from this safe space to really experience the world of bikes and biking without the competition and "pushiness" that young men can bring. This week-long camp was provided free and with one week serving high schoolers and the 2nd week serving middle-school aged young people. The bike shop made over 220 bikes accessible to south richmond young people and their families in 2022.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Uncertain tax positions the accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the organization and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (ubti). The organization has recognized no uncertain tax positions for the year ended december 31, 2022.
