“Part III Green Team -- Summer 2018 GT stepped into the public rock climbing space at Manchester Wall. This outdoor climbing amenity is popular in the region and casual park users and climbers were literally bumping into each other. The teens from GT most of whom had never even seen people rock climbing before, spent time in the James River Park studying the problem from all sides. The result was a new trail design that would remain in the face of the seasonal flooding the site experienced. This cohort of urban teens then installed the trail, earning admiration and gratitude from walkers and climbers both; as well as earning themselves a place in this previously foreign activity and space. GT now has access to both outdoor/indoor rock climbing experiences serving over 60 youth. This outdoor climbing amenity was becoming hugely popular in the region and casual park users and climbers were literally bumping into each other. The teens from Green Team most of whom had never even seen people rock climbing before, spent time in the James River Park studying the problem from all sides. The result was a new trail design that would remain in the face of the seasonal flooding the site experienced. This cohort of urban teens then installed the trail, earning admiration and gratitude from walkers and climbers both; as well as earning themselves a place in this previously foreign activity and space. Green Team now has access to both outdoor and indoor rock climbing experiences. Part III Workforce -- GW also played a significant part in constructing GWRVAs Enterprise Center and Bike Shop in Bellemeade. Small but mighty the Green Workforce is a program where teens developed a variety of both life and workplace skills. These teens - showed up every day, collaborated in designing the days and weeks tasks, drove to sites, loaded and unloaded the necessary tools and equipment, used those tools and equipment safely to build, install or maintain elements of the built environment and often managed the volunteers who came to help. Through the GW, GWRVA helped prepare teens for careers in carpentry and building trades, landscaping and green infrastructure as well as created opportunities for teens to build skills in financial management. GW worked on 6 sites. Enterprise Center and Charlie Thomas Bike Shop Spring of 2018 brought the opening of Groundwork RVAs Enterprise Center connected to the Oakgrove Bellemeade school and community center on Richmonds south side. The Enterprise Center has become a South Richmond operational hub for Groundwork RVA activities, as well as housing the Charlie Thomas Bike Shop. This program encourages students to learn about the world outside and develop healthier lifestyles through community volunteering and/or demonstrating academic success or commitment. Through the bike shop, students are part of an after-school bike club, a daily bike or walk to school program as well as consistent park clean-up days. Through academic achievement or community service, students and community members can earn their own bicycle and learn how to maintain it. Community members The Bike shop made bikes available to over 400 students and youth in 2018. All these programs are designed to promote healthy lifestyles that include biking and walking.”

Utilizing many of the spaces they had helped to build-out in 2017 at the Six Points Innovation Center in Richmonds Highland Park neighborhood, the teens continued building their skills and training in the safe use of tools and equipment. Green Workforce teens designed, built and delivered over 25 waist-high, self-watering planters for use by area seniors who wanted to grow their own food. The teens from GT most of whom had never even seen people rock climbing before, spent time in the James River Park studying the problem from all sides. The result was a new trail design that would remain in the face of the seasonal flooding the site experienced. This cohort of urban teens then installed the trail, earning admiration and gratitude from walkers and climbers both; as well as earning themselves a place in this previously foreign activity and space. GT now has access to both outdoor/indoor rock climbing experiences serving over 60 youth. This outdoor climbing amenity was becoming hugely popular in the region and casual park users and climbers were literally bumping into each other. The teens from Green Team most of whom had never even seen people rock climbing before, spent time in the James River Park studying the problem from all sides. The result was a new trail design that would remain in the face of the seasonal flooding the site experienced. Green Team now has access to both outdoor and indoor rock climbing experiences. Part III Workforce -- GW also played a significant part in constructing GWRVAs Enterprise Center and Bike Shop in Bellemeade. Small but mighty the Green Workforce is a program where teens developed a variety of both life and workplace skills. These teens - showed up every day, collaborated in designing the days and weeks tasks, drove to sites, loaded and unloaded the necessary tools and equipment, used those tools and equipment safely to build, install or maintain elements of the built environment and often managed the volunteers who came to help. Through the GW, GWRVA helped prepare teens for careers in carpentry and building trades, landscaping and green infrastructure as well as created opportunities for teens to build skills in financial management. GW worked on 6 sites. Enterprise Center and Charlie Thomas Bike Shop Spring of 2018 brought the opening of Groundwork RVAs Enterprise Center connected to the Oakgrove Bellemeade school and community center on Richmonds south side. The Enterprise Center has become a South Richmond operational hub for Groundwork RVA activities, as well as housing the Charlie Thomas Bike Shop. This program encourages students to learn about the world outside and develop healthier lifestyles through community volunteering and/or demonstrating academic success or commitment. Through the bike shop, students are part of an after-school bike club, a daily bike or walk to school program as well as consistent park clean-up days. Through academic achievement or community service, students and community members can earn their own bicycle and learn how to maintain it. Community members The Bike shop made bikes available to over 400 students and youth in 2018. All these programs are designed to promote healthy lifestyles that include biking and walking. |
