Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Stylexchange: stylexchange provides clothing for the entire family from infants to adults. In fiscal year 2020/2021, 1,497 unique households received clothing and we distributed 76,615 items. This number is significantly higher than the prior fiscal year, reflecting the shift in program access. Clients were able to shop for themselves when the building re-opened in july. Previously, covid safety measures meant limited client access, with volunteers fulfilling orders. Clothing is available to any client in need, there are no geographic boundaries limiting use. The selection of free clothing gives clients the opportunity to dress confidently for an interview or for the workplace, and to be warm and comfortable in the winter months, as well as have access to new socks and underwear.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Personalized support including resource advising, case management and emergency fund: previously separate programs, the emergency fund, resource advising and case management areas are now integrated client services that provide broader basic needs. These services are not a one-size-fits all and require personalized approaches and plans, dependent on client needs and goals. Detailed numbers representing our personalized support services are as follows: through resource advising - client support services, we provide referrals to other social services or available resources such as health insurance, snap benefits, legal advice, dental care and tax preparation, among other things. Case management - client support services includes intensive support to support individuals and families working towards stability. A reminder that this category counts simple referrals (one and done) to multiple referrals to longer-term and more intensive case management. In 2020/2021, 1,457 families received more intensive assistance from our client support services team, which includes licensed social workers. These services are important because valley outreach is where people show up when they need help - we start with food and learn more about a client's situation and connect them to available resources. Households that receive client support services: 60% for case management (individualized approaches towards greater stability), 27% for resource advising (connections to supports, application assistance), 12% for funded services (52% of financial requests were granted and we leveraged outside funding in 43% of all requests). Housing, transportation and utilities are the top needs of clients.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 2, Part V, Line 4

The purpose of the operating reserve is to build and maintain an adequate level of unrestricted net assets to support the organization's day-to-day operations in the event of unforeseen shortfalls. The reserve may also be used for one-time, nonrecurring expenses that will build long-term capacity, such as staff development, research and development, or investment infrastructure. The target minimum operating reserve is 150,000 and will be calculated each year after approval of the annual budget. The purpose of the capital reserve is to support the organization's capital needs and obligations accompanying building ownership. The target minimum capital reserve is 50,000 and capital needs will be reviewed annually by the facilities subcommittee.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The organization is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Management has determined that the organization does not have any uncertain tax positions and associated unrecognized benefits that materially impact the financial statement or related disclosures. Tax returns for the past three years remain open for examination.

WE MOVED FROM ONLY CURBSIDE DISTRIBUTION AND DELIVERIES TO FULL, IN-PERSON SHOPPING IN JULY 2021. OPTIONS REMAINED IN PLACE FOR THE CURBSIDE PICK-UP AND HOME DELIVERY. OFF-SITE COLLABORATION CONTINUED, SPECIFICALLY AT CIMARRON, A NEARBY COMMUNITY. WE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING TWICE-MONTHLY FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS IN THIS LAKE ELMO NEIGHBORHOOD. OVERALL FOOD PROGRAM NUMBERS REFLECT AN INCREASE OF 7% IN THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS SERVED YET A 6% DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HOUSEHOLDS SERVED. THIS INDICATES LARGER SIZED FAMILIES UTILIZING OUR PROGRAMS. WE HAD A TOTAL OF 17,620 VISITS (DUPLICATED COUNT, INDICATING LEVEL OF USE), AN INCREASE OF 6% OVER THE PRIOR YEAR.
