“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Organizing: HIP builds a base of public health workers to take action on social determinants of health and equity as part of broader social justice movement. In 2021, our Public Health Awakened initiative now consisting of over 2,800 public health professionals in all 50 states mobilized around a number of issues, including paid sick/family leave, COVID-19 response and recovery, climate policy, housing justice, labor protections, decarceration, defunding police, Title 42 exclusions, and stopping ICE transfers. Members supported campaigns through targeted outreach to decision-makers, phone banking, op-eds and letters to the editor, issuing fact sheets, messaging guidance, and sign-on letters, and giving testimony and speaking at events. We also hosted quarterly national network meetings and regular national Action Hours, and continued to support and grow our chapters in Michigan, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.Advocacy: HIP amplifies the use of public health research, expertise, framing, and communications to support targeted campaigns and movements. In 2021, we did that for 75+ local, state, and federal campaigns by signing on to campaigns; speaking at press conferences and public hearings; organizing health professionals to make public statements in the context of legislative and administrative debates; helping to collect public comments about federal rule changes; and producing fact sheets and infographics to bring a health lens to policy making.”
“The Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board have determined that the Organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under IRC 501(c)(3) and California RTC 23701(d). The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions as of December 31, 2021 and is not aware of any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. The Organizations tax returns are generally subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.”

We designed and recruited our fifth cohort of public health leaders to participate in Health Equity Awakened 21 leaders from 11 health departments across the country to do leadership development and advance racial and social justice strategies for public health. We launched our 2021 cohort of Powerbuilding Partnerships for Health, where we facilitated government and community organizing partnerships in four sites across the country. We also published numerous new resources for public health both the field broadly and health departments specifically to improve their systems, policies, and practices to advance health equity goals. Topics focused on police violence, incarceration, worker health and safety, and equity lens tools. |

In 2021, our Public Health Awakened initiative now consisting of over 2,800 public health professionals in all 50 states mobilized around a number of issues, including paid sick/family leave, COVID-19 response and recovery, climate policy, housing justice, labor protections, decarceration, defunding police, Title 42 exclusions, and stopping ICE transfers. Members supported campaigns through targeted outreach to decision-makers, phone banking, op-eds and letters to the editor, issuing fact sheets, messaging guidance, and sign-on letters, and giving testimony and speaking at events. We also hosted quarterly national network meetings and regular national Action Hours, and continued to support and grow our chapters in Michigan, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.Advocacy: HIP amplifies the use of public health research, expertise, framing, and communications to support targeted campaigns and movements. In 2021, we did that for 75+ local, state, and federal campaigns by signing on to campaigns; speaking at press conferences and public hearings; organizing health professionals to make public statements in the context of legislative and administrative debates; helping to collect public comments about federal rule changes; and producing fact sheets and infographics to bring a health lens to policy making. |
