Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Field-building, Advocacy & Other: HIP mobilizes the public health community to contribute its knowledge, skills, and resources to social justice movements to advance health equity. In 2018, we continued to build our initiative now consisting of over 1,400 public health professionals to accomplish this goal. Through this, we mobilized the public health community on seven federal policy changes, convening members six times, and partnered with others to advance social justice in the Bay Area. HIP also works to hold the field of Health Impact Assessment accountable to its values by fiscally sponsoring the Society of Practitioners of Health Impact Assessment. We continue to staff the National Criminal Justice and Public Health Alliance and to develop and disseminate resources focused on bringing a public health lens to criminal justice issues. HIP amplifies the use of public health research, expertise, and framing to support targeted campaigns and movements. In 2018, we did that for twelve state and federal campaigns by speaking at press conferences and public hearings; organizing health professionals to make public statements in the context of legislative and administrative debates; helping to collect public comments about federal rule changes; and producing fact sheets and infographics to bring a health lens to policy making. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Capacity building: We provide training, technical assistance, and leadership development to build the capacity of public agencies to take action on the social determinants of health and equity. In 2018, HIP provided training and/or technical assistance to six governmental health departments and/or academic institutions to advance health equity and to eight organizations to conduct Health Impact Assessment. We provided leadership development to 37 emerging leaders within governmental public health to advance health equity through a year-long leadership development program. We integrated new content into our resources for public health practitioners to improve their systems, policies, and practices to better align with health equity goals and released a paper on further incorporating equity into the Public Health Accreditation process. We launched a pilot program to build the capacity of local health departments and community organizing groups to form deep partnerships in support of social justice campaigns. Finally, we trained public health agency staff to increase their understanding of and ability to take action on criminal justice issues and change the dominant narratives about criminal justice issues.

In 2018, these strategies included presenting and/or attending 12 conferences, organizing and facilitating a one day workshop for local health departments in California, holding or supporting two screenings of films, hosting or presenting at four webinars, publishing eleven blog posts, sending out 47 email campaigns, and 40 instances of media coverage.
