In 2020, our Public Health Awakened initiative now consisting of over 2,600 public health professionals mobilized around a number of issues including, the 2020 election, paid sick/family leave, voting safety and access, COVID-19 response and recovery, housing justice, labor protections, decarceration, defunding police, and stopping ICE transfers. Members supported campaigns through targeted outreach to decision-makers, phone banking, op-eds and letters to the editor, issuing fact sheets, messaging guidance, and sign-on letters, and giving testimony and speaking at events. We also produced and disseminated resources related to COVID-19 response and recovery, and continued to support and grow our chapters in Michigan, Los Angeles, and Washington DCAdvocacy: HIP amplifies the use of public health research, expertise, framing, and communications to support targeted campaigns and movements. In 2020, we did that for 50+ local, state, and federal campaigns by signing on to campaigns; speaking at press conferences and public hearings; organizing health professionals to make public statements in the context of legislative and administrative debates; helping to collect public comments about federal rule changes; and producing fact sheets and infographics to bring a health lens to policy making.”
“The Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board have determined that the Organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under IRC 501(c)(3) and California RTC 23701(d). The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions as of December 31, 2020 and is not aware of any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. The Organizations tax returns are generally subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.”
