Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is three-fold: (1) to provide those facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses with nourishing whole foods meals that can support their healing, (2) to teach teens how to cook and eat for health and to develop them as future leaders committed to making a difference in their communities, and (3) to educate the general public about the vital link between what we eat and our health.

Ceres Community Project's mission is to build healthy communities by restoring whole local and organic food to its place as the foundation of health, and by connecting people in heart-centered ways to themselves, others and the earth.

IRS990/Desc0Healing Meals ProgramCeres Community Project's Healing Meals for Healthy Communities program includes the following key components:1) Supporting primarily low-income individuals dealing with serious illness with free and low-cost delivered and nutrient-rich organic meals, nutrition education, and a community of caring.2) Involving young people as volunteer gardeners and chefs, giving them direct, hands-on experience of the difference that fresh, healthy food and community make, and of their own capacity to contribute while building life and work-ready skills.3) Engaging people of all ages and from all walks as volunteers and in-kind contributors in order to connect them to others and to their value as an integral part of the community. The Organization provided 71,809 meals from three kitchens to approximately 451 low income clients in crises with life threatening illnesses in the Sonoma and Marin Counties of California. Most of these clients are living with a cancer diagnosis. The others have a wide range of illnesses including ALS, Crohns Disease, Parkinsons, MS and Hepatitis C. Clients are eligible to received weekly meal packages for up to six months. Client liaisons visit each new client to access their nutritional needs and counsel them on healthy food and eating. These liaisons stay in regular contact with each client throughout the service. Clients are taught how to cook and eat for health via the delivery of educational materials, weekly meal packages, a weekly educational newsletter Nutrition Bites, and the organizations Nourishing Connections Cookbook. In addition, Ceres teaches cooking classes so that clients may develop the ability to care for themselves through the food they eat.Clients surveyed three months after they have stopped receiving meals report a 40% increase in vegetable consumption compared to before they participated in the program, and nearly 80% have reduced the amount of fast and processed food they are eating. 100% said that the meals were extremely important to their healing and 83% said that what they learned about healthy eating and nutrition was extremely important to them.Approximately 446 adults contributed 23,351 hours of service by mentoring teens, delivering meals, picking up food donations, meeting with clients, sterilizing containers, prepping food for the meal program. In addition they assisted in educational classes, community outreach events, fundraising events and general administration.Approximately 408 teenagers contributed approximately 16,675 hours of organic gardening, cooking, packaging, dishwashing, mopping, serving, and teaching services to help grow the food and prepare the meals served. Each day in the kitchen or garden they spend 30 minutes learning about hunger in their community, why local and organic food makes a difference, reading and understanding ingredient labels, healthy snacks, and values like inclusion and kindness.Teens experience their importance in the world, take on meaningful levels of responsibility, learn how to work with youth from various backgrounds as part of a team, develop self-confidence and compassion, discover the joy of giving to others, and learn the healing power of food from seed to table. Teens who are active for at least six months are 29% more likely to be eating 3 servings of vegetables each day. The percentage that say they eat fast food either daily or frequently drops from 81% to 28%. Teens are also 50% more likely to be encouraging friends and family to make healthier choices.Teen Program Development:In 2013 we implemented a Work Ready Certification Program to help youth prepare for work. The teens volunteer for at least three months in the kitchen and/or garden and also attend two classes a month for three months. The classes cover what work-readiness means, work place ethics, labor laws governing teen employement, writing a resume and cover letter, how to make a good first impression, and concludes with mock job interview.
