IRS990/Description0Meal ProgramThe Organization provided 48,886 meals to approximately 387 clients in crises with life threatening illnesses in the Sonoma and Marin Counties of California. Approximately 84% of these clients are living with a cancer diagnosis. The other 16% have a wide range of illnesses including ALS, Crohns Disease, Parkinsons, MS and Hepatitis C. Approximately 88% of these clients have household income below $45,000 and 57% have household incomes below $25,000. Approximately 95% of the meals were provided for free, and 5% were provided for a fee to clients not meeting the low income eligibility requirements.Clients are eligible to received weekly meal packages for up to six months. Client liaisons visit each new client to access their nutritional needs and counsel them on healthy food and eating. These liaisons stay in regular contact with each client throughout the service. Clients are taught how to cook and eat for health via the delivery of educational materials, weekly meal packages, a weekly educational newsletter Nutrition Bites, and the organizations Nourishing Connections Cookbook. In addition, Ceres teaches cooking classes so that clients may develop the ability to care for themselves through the food they eat.In January 2012 the organization began a two-and-a-half year project to evaluate if and how these clients are changing their diets as a result of this three month meal service. Early results show that clients are eating up to 50% more fruits and vegetables, and more than half say they have reduced the amount of processed food, fast food, white sugar and white four they are eating.Approximately 319 teenagers contributed approximately 12,092 hours of gardening, cooking, packaging, dishwashing, mopping, serving, and teaching services to help grow the food and prepare the meals served. Each day in the kitchen or garden they spend 30 minutes learning about hunger in their community, why local and organic food makes a difference, reading and understanding ingredient labels, healthy snacks, and values like inclusion and kindness.Teens experience their importance in the world, take on meaningful levels of responsibility, learn how to work with youth from various backgrounds as part of a team, develop self-confidence and compassion, discover the joy of giving to others, and learn the healing power of food from seed to table. After six months in the program, teen report significant changes in their diets, cook more often and become advocates for healthy eating. Their fruit and vegetable consumption rises by almost 20% and the variety of fruits and vegetables they are eating increases by 24%. The percentage of teens who report cooking at home at least once a week increases from 66% to 90%, and they are 22% more likely to talk with their friends and family about their food choices.Approximately 380 adults contributed 16,643 hours of service by mentoring teens, delivering meals, picking up food donations, meeting with clients, sterilizing containers, prepping food for the meal program. In addition they assisted in educational classes, community outreach events, fundraising events and general administration.
