“A copy of the form 990 is distributed to the chair of the board for review prior to filing. The chair shares the form 990 with the other board members as needed and at the chair's discretion.”
“Each board member, officer, and key employee is required to annually affirm that they understand the conflict of interest policy, affirm that they have no conflicts of interest, and disclose any conflicts of interst that may exist. "covered persons" are required to disclose any possible conflict of interest as soon as they arise. After the "covered person" has disclosed the existence of a financial interest or a possible financial interest, the board shall determine if a conflict of interest exists because the "covered person" has an actual financial interest in the proposed transaction and that he or she shall benefit from such proposed transaction. If the board has reasonable cause to believe that a "covered person" has failed to disclose a financial interest, it shall inform the "covered person" of the basis for such belief and afford the "covered person" an opportunity to explain the failure of such disclosure.”
“The compensation for the ceo/president and highest compensated employees is based on compensation of comparable positions at universities and teaching colleges, compensation of comparable positions at nonprofit organizations of similar purpose and budget, and compensation of employees at most recent employers. The compensation for the ceo/president is approved by the board of directors.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available upon request to the public.”
“The return is being amended for the following: 1) added kathryn murdoch and jim bildner as board members to part vii. 2) adjusted schedule a, part ii, line 5 to $21,962,838 from $14,440,857. This changed the public support percentage from 65.25% to 47.16%.”
“Partnerships journalism: the organization brings a partnerships journalism initiative to the service of the two core programs, climate matters and sea level rise, to add depth to the understanding of the human impacts of climate change and, when applicable, its promising solutions. Partnering with local and national media organizations, the organization produces and helps develop stories for a wide variety of print, digital, radio, and tv outlets. For example, in 2018, the organization partnered with pbs newshour and the pensacola news journal for a story on "living shorelines" in florida, and with kqed, an npr affiliate in california, for a feature story on the air pollution and the health impacts of wildfires. The organization's related story appeared on the front page of the idaho statesman. Enterprise: in addition to these three programs, there is another program under development titled "enterprise" which focuses on marketing organizational tools and data to domestic and foreign corporations such as insurance and real estate companies, rating agencies and national, state and local governmental entities.”
“Professional fees: program service expenses 663,706. Management and general expenses 102,691. Fundraising expenses 108,227. Total expenses 874,624.”
“The loan for $750,000 and outstanding interest on it for $4,407 was forgiven by schmidt family foundation in tax year 2018. An officer of the schmidt family foundation is also a founding board member of climate central, inc.”
“The organization follows accounting requirements associated with uncertainty in income taxes using the provisions of the financial accounting standards board ("fasb") accounting standards codification ("asc") 740, income taxes. Using that guidance, tax positions initially need to be recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not that the positions will not be sustained upon examination by the taxing authorities. It also provides guidance for derecognition, classification, interest and penalties, accounting in interim periods, disclosure, and transition. As of december 31, 2018 and 2017, the organization had no uncertain tax positions that qualified for either recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.”

OUR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH IS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE THE PUBLIC BY ILLUMINATING THE SCIENTIFIC FACTS OF CLIMATE, USING PIONEERING ANALYSIS AND DATA VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES.OUR SURGING SEAS PROGRAM AND ITS SUITE OF INTERACTIVE WEB-BASED TOOLS DEPICTING THREATS FROM SEA LEVEL RISE AND COASTAL FLOODING CONTINUE TO BE USED TO INFORM RISK ASSESSMENTS, EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EFFORTS, COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES, AND POLICY ANALYSES. 2018 WAS A YEAR OF TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT, PRODUCTION OF PEER REVIEWED PAPERS AND OUTREACH TO THE USER COMMUNITY. THE SEA LEVEL RISE SCIENTISTS BEGAN WORK ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF GLOBAL MAPS, COASTAL/DEMTM. THE IMPROVED TOOL WILL ALLOW FOR GREATER PRECISION IN THE ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACTS OF SEA LEVEL RISE ON SENSITIVE AREAS OF RISK SUCH AS AFFORDABLE HOUSING EXPOSED TO COASTAL FLOOD RISK. THE NEW MAPS WILL BE RELEASED IN 2019.SEA LEVEL RISE TOOLS WERE RELEASED IN SPANISH TO FACILITATE USE BY A BROADER AUDIENCE.SEA LEVEL RISE SCIENTISTS PUBLISHED 3 PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS AS CO-AUTHORS. ADDITIONALLY, THEY WORKED ON 3 ADDITIONAL PAPERS TO BE REVIEWED AND RELEASED IN 2019.OUTREACH AND EDUCATION CONTINUED TO BE A KEY COMPONENT OF DELIVERING THE SEA LEVEL RISE INFORMATION TO AUDIENCES MOST IMPACTED. CLIMATE CENTRAL CONTINUED ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH NAACP TRAINING TEAMS, WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES IN NEED OR SUPPORT. |
