NPA ADVANCE: NPA Advance is a project to assist women postdocs in making the transition to the professoriate. Supported by the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE program for "advancing" the representation of women in academic careers, NPA ADVANCE focuses on adapting and disseminating promising institutional practices that can help women postdocs successfully transition to faculty careers. In 2012, completed activities included developing new resources for postdoc fathers, maintaining project Web site, writing first draft of resource book for institutions and disseminating information through presentations.

Activity 3

NSF-SBE 2012 Workshop: The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) organized and hosted a 1.5-day workshop at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., to expand dialogue in the postdoctoral community towards: (1) learning more about the postdoc experience in fields of study where postdoctorate study is not common and (2) providing professional development opportunities for the postdoc participants. Participants included postdoctoral scholars (postdocs) in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences, in computational science/cyber-infrastructure, and in other related fields of study. Postdocs have not been a tradition in these sciences as in the life sciences, where completing a postdoc has become a requisite to career success. Through this workshop, the NPA learned more about the challenges faced by postdocs in fields of study where postdoctorate training is not common and was better able to make informed recommendations for best practices to improve retention of these postdocs in academic research.
