Activity 2

Academics 1. The School of Nursing announced its first doctoral program for the University. Keeping with the School's mission to prepare nurses for the highest level of nursing practice, the program will require a master's degree and will build on specialized clinical focus as a family or psychiatric nurse practitioner.2. The University has named its first Dean of Academic Engagement. Professor Elizabeth Boquet will be providing leadership in the area of student engagement, focusing especially on academic advising and academic support areas. 3. In an increasingly complex, interconnected world, the 21st century requires a heightened sense of civic and cultural awareness spanning local to global horizons. With this in mind, Fairfield has adopted the first-ever, University-wide singular area of focus - Global Citizenship. The campus community will come together to organize courses, coordinate important lectures, concerts, gallery installations, symposia and festivals, to reflect the initiative. 4. The Davis Educational Foundation has awarded Fairfield University a $200,000 grant to further the work of the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), which was established in 2003 as an on-campus resource for professors seeking to learn and share information about the newest educational tools and techniques. The grant will help widen the Center's impact on promoting integrated learning at Fairfield, especially in the core curriculum - a pillar of the University's strategic plan. The work focuses on the College of Arts and Sciences, where the core is taught. Faculty will continue to support major goals of the strategic plan calling for a self-sustaining culture of integrated teaching and learning in ways that can be shared across the University. Another main objective is to assess outcomes and make changes based on results and evidence.

Activity 3

Campus Planning1. A critical component of Fairfield University's strategic plan is the development of its physical plant to accommodate new environments for the integration of "Living and Learning". Among the projects begun during the 09-10 academic year are: 42 Bellarmine Road -the conversion of St. Ignatius Hall into suite-style student housing; 51 McInnes Road- the conversion of a new apartment-style student residence in the Village; 70 McCormick Road -construction of a new student residence hall in the Quad, and John C. Dolan Hall -renovation of a traditional residence hall to an apartment-style student residence. These projects not only address the need for the residential environments that relate to our living and learning goals, but they improve the University's competitive position in the marketplace. These projects will result in a net increase of 232 beds. A comprehensive "way-finding and signage" plan has also been developed and will be phased in. 2. As a Jesuit, Catholic institution of higher learning, Fairfield recognizes its commitment to caring for our earth. Students, faculty, and administrators and staff have mobilized to implement a number of environmental stewardship initiatives and in 2009, the University was named one of the nation's "Cool Schools" by the Sierra Club - the oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the nation. The United States Environmental Protection Agency honored the institution with an Energy Start CHP award for building the combined heat and power plant, designed to have the capability to generate almost the entire electrical load of the campus. In December 2009, the earth-friendly Jesuit Community Center was opened. The building has a design that employs a variety of 'green' strategies and technologies that minimize its ecological impact, such as a sod roof, a geo-thermal heating and cooling system that reduces carbon dioxide emissions and recycled and sustainable building materials. The University recently installed technology in a residence hall elevator that will produce 'clean' energy. A hybrid electric bus is not operating as a campus shuttle and the dining hall went 'tray-less' resulted in less food, beverage and water waste. Major recycling programs are at work on campus, including one that gathers rarely recycled #5 plastics and batteries. Fairfield was also the first university in the nation to install 'Uno' machines, all-in-one beverage can recyclers. In the spring of 2010, ground was broken on the campus's very first vegetable and herb garden. An educational project for environmental studies and biology students, its harvest will turn up on student dining hall menus and stock the shelves of area food pantries.
