Part III, Line 28 - Statement of Program Service Accomplishments

Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) focused on the following program areas in 2022: Despite laws and regulations restricting the use of lead in paint (mainly in residential applications), we continue to highlight the need to eliminating the use of lead paint for nonresidential applications including coatings on steel structures, bridges, road markings, signage, and vehicles in countries around the world. Highlighting opportunities to prevent tuberculosis (TB) by reducing silica dust exposures in high-risk occupations including mining, construction, artificial stone and ceramic manufacturing. Research to better assess the health hazards and environmental contamination from the lithium-ion battery supply chain (including mining and smelting metals) and inherent risks in recycling/ disposal options. Over the past year we have: Drafted a six-point plan signed by more than 60 organizations from around the world for the first ever G7 group of countries meeting dedicated to lead poisoning prevention; Produced a video to expose lead industry tactics to raise doubts on established scientific consensus around the harms of low-level lead exposures: Published a paper in the American Journal of Public Health outlining lead industry influence in public policy that traces the origins of current tactics to maintain market share by promoting the benefits of lead and downplaying the hazards; Provided a small grant and technical assistance for a study of environmental contamination around lead battery recycling plants in Mexico; Provided technical assistance to small-scale Tanzanite miners to reduce exposures to silica dust in underground mines; We wrote a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed by some of our international partners to encourage the agency to require that old lead water pipes be recycled in the U.S. instead of being sent to more polluting plants abroad.
