| Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) focused on the following program areas in 2020: Highlighting the need to reduce exposures to hazardous metals including lead, arsenic and cadmium from regular usage of inexpensive aluminum cookware made from recycled metals in low and middle-income countries. Despite laws and regulations restricting the use of lead in paint (mainly in residential applications), we continue to highlight the need to eliminating the use of lead paint for nonresidential applications including coatings on steel structures, bridges, road markings, signage, and vehicles in countries around the world. Raising awareness and advocating for increased regulation and investment to reduce the environmental and occupational exposures relating to the manufacture and recycling of lead batteries. Highlighting opportunities to prevent tuberculosis by reducing silica dust exposures in high-risk industries including mining, construction, artificial stone and ceramic manufacturing. Research to better assess the health hazards and environmental contamination from the lithium-ion battery supply chain (including mining and smelting metals) and inherent risks in recycling/ disposal options. Raising awareness of the ongoing export of degraded and spent lithium-ion batteries to low and middle-income countries from the growing exports of used hybrid and electric vehicles. Encouraging efforts to ban or restrict the use of asbestos in construction and other products and to address ongoing exposures related to legacy uses of this hazardous material. In addition, OK International is continuing to work in artisanal mining communities in Africa to reduce hazardous exposures to lead and silica dust. Our project in Northern Nigeria has introduced safer mining practices in communities impacted from severe lead poisoning. We have trained thousands of miners on methods to reduce exposures from lead in gold ore during mining and processing. Our efforts include reducing off-site contamination to protect children in these mining communities and helping to identify and remediate contaminated homes. In Cameroon, we are working to pilot the use of low-cost silica dust controls in an artisanal gold mining community among self-employed subsistence miners. | $157,611 | $10,028 |
