| Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) focused on the following program areas in 2018:OK International is working in Northern Nigeria to introduce safer mining practices in communities impacted from severe lead poisoning. The source of exposure is the gold ore that contains significant concentrations of lead. Our work in these mining communities involves training miners, introducing dust control strategies, and encouraging efforts to reduce off-site contamination. In addition to addressing lead hazards, we are piloting methods to reduce the respirable silica dust in small-scale mining and other dusty workplaces that is a significant risk factor for active Tuberculosis (TB). Silica dust exposure causes silicosis, cancer and is a significant risk factor for TB. We published the following articles in 2018 related to this topic:"Reducing Lead and Silica Dust Exposures in Small-scale Mining in Northern Nigeria" Gottesfeld P, Tirima S, Anka SM, Fotso A, and Nota MM, Annals of Work Exposures and Health, 63.1 (2018): 1-8."Preventing tuberculosis among high-risk workers" Gottesfeld, Perry, Reid, Michael, and Goosby. The Lancet Global Health 6.12 (2018): e1274-e1275."International silica standards: Countries must update exposure limits" Perry Gottesfeld. International Safety and Hygiene News, (October 2018)OK International spearheaded efforts at the United Nations to seek recognition for the need to invest in TB prevention in the workplace. We estimate that 300,000 new TB cases can be prevented each year with appropriate workplace interventions. The United Nations has recognized the need to establish programs to reduce TB among miners and other vulnerable workers exposed to silica dust. The UN declaration from the first ever General Assembly High-level Meeting on TB held in September 2018 called on countries to commit to implementing primary prevention in high-risk occupations by reducing silica dust exposures in mining, construction and other dusty workplaces. In addition, OK International is working to prevent lead poisoning by identifying sources of exposure that contribute significant exposures to vulnerable populations in low and middle-income countries. Our work in this area includes efforts to phase out the use of lead in paint, encourage the adoption of laws and regulations on the lead content of products, and develop standards for improving lead battery manufacturing and recycling around the world. We published the following oped in 2018:Opinion: "Eliminating lead paint would save millions of lives" Perry Gottesfeld and Johnson Ongking.
