Occupational Knowledge is dedicated to improving public health through innovative strategies to reduce exposures to protect public health. We seek to address inequities in environmental standards between developed and developing countries by working in partnership with industry, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Our work is intended to build capacity to address occupational and environmental health in project countries.
To engage in charitable and educational activities related to environmental health.

| Occupational Knowledge International focused on the following programs in 2014: Lead Poisoning Prevention: Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) is working to prevent lead poisoning by reducing the use of lead paint in developing countries, and by reducing exposures from mining and smelting activities, lead battery recycling operations, and electronic waste (ewaste) recycling. We have also initiated efforts to test the lead content of specific consumer products of concern in some of the countries we are working in.OK International is active in working with partner organizations in over twelve countries in Asia and Africa to test for lead paint, build capacity, provide technical assistance, and initiate programs to encourage new regulations for the lead content of new paints. We published the results of the lead paint testing we conducted along with our partners in Nepal in the Journal of Environmental Research. In 2014 we worked with our Kenyan partners to complete a study investigating the effects of lead exposures on blood pressure among workers in a paint factory, and scrap metal demolition, pharmaceutical and battery manufacturing plants in Kenya. The resulting publication Lead Exposure and Blood Pressure among Workers in Diverse Industrial Plants in Kenya was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. We also worked with partners in Africa and the U.S. to quantify exposures to lead and other heavy metals from aluminum cookware made with scrap metal. The results of this study were published in 2014 in the Journal Science of the Total Environment. In 2014 we made considerable progress in finalizing a third party certification program for paints without added lead. We hope to see the first paint companies obtain certification under this program in 2015.OK International also serves on the executive committee for an international partnership to eliminate lead in paint jointly coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This partnership was created by UN member countries at the International Conference on Chemicals Management in May 2009 as part of a resolution calling on all countries to eliminate the use of lead in paints. Silica Exposure Assessment and Control: OK International is actively working to raise awareness of the hazards of silica exposures in mining, stone crushing, quarries and from other occupations. In particular we conducted the first ever study on airborne silica exposures in small-scale gold mining at a number of sites in Tanzania. As we are publishing this information we hope to raise the profile of this public health epidemic that is affecting more than 10 million miners around the world. During 2014, we received approximately $2,070 of donated laboratory analytical services from EMSL Analytical in Cinnaminson, NJ, and $1,225 of donated laboratory analytical services from Galson Laboratories in East Syracuse, NY. Sampling equipment with a fair market value of $1,200 and $4,900 was donated by Sensidyne in St. Petersburg, FL, and SKC in Eighty-Four, PA, respectively. | $92,000 | $9,860 |

“The Organization was originally determined to have public charity status under section 509(a)(2) of the IRC, since its main source of funding consisted of fee revenue for work performed under various contracts (exchange transactions). Over time, the Organization's funding base has changed such that it is now substantially supported by donations from governmental units or the general public. Consequently, the Organization's public charity status is more properly classified under section 509(a)(1) of the IRC. Accordingly, during the prior year, the Organization changed its reason for public charity status in Part I of Schedule A.”
