Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) focused on the following program areas in 2019:OK International is working in Northern Nigeria to introduce safer mining practices in communities impacted from severe lead poisoning. The source of exposure is the gold ore that contains significant concentrations of lead. Our work involves training miners, introducing dust control strategies, and encouraging efforts to reduce off-site contamination to protect children in these mining communities. In addition to addressing lead hazards, we have successfully reduced respirable silica dust by implementing wet methods in small-scale mining to reduce silicosis and lung cancer risk. This dust is also a significant risk factor for active Tuberculosis (TB). Silica dust exposure is present in all mining areas and a significant hazard even if no lead or other heavy metals are present in the ore. We published the following article in 2019 describing the success we have had in lowering lead exposures among artisanal miners in these communities: Declining Blood Lead Levels Among Small-scale Miners Participating in a Safer Mining Pilot Program in Nigeria. Gottesfeld, P., Meltzer , G., Costello, S., Greig, J., Thurtle, N., Bil, K., Mwangombe, B.J., Nota, M.M. In Press: BMJ Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 76.11 (2019): 849-853.We also published the following article related to hazards from lead and lithium ion batteries: Gottesfeld, Perry. "Commentary health risks from climate fix: The downside of energy storage batteries." Environmental research 178 (2019): 108677.In addition, OK International is working to prevent lead poisoning by identifying sources of exposure that contribute significant exposures to vulnerable populations in low and middle-income countries. Our work in this area includes supporting the phase-out of lead in paint, encouraging the adoption of laws and regulations on the lead content of products, and improving standards for lead battery manufacturing and recycling around the world. In the U.S. we have advocated for measures to prevent lead poisoning. We published the following letter in the Journal of Environmental Health: Letter to the editor re: the CDC blood lead reference value for children, Perry Gottesfeld and Deborah Cory-Slechta; (Environmental Health18.1 (2019): 32.)$173,200$17,832
