Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Juma is a nonprofit, youth development organization that empowers low-income youth to make successful transitions to independence in adulthood. Juma owns and operates social enterprise concessions businesses at major sports and entertainment venues to provide meaningful employment and workforce development training opportunities to youth from low-income backgrounds. Through innovative programs that integrate employment in social enterprises with college preparation, career services, financial capability training, asset-building services and leadership development, juma ensures that young people have the tools to break the cycle of poverty.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Business Employment: Job skills training and part-time employment at Juma's social enterprise concessions businesses at local sports and entertainment venues provide, for many youth, a first employment opportunity. Students earn money, develop work skills, set goals, and increase leadership capacity. Juma youth work up to 15 hours per week. For high-performing youth, Juma also administers a youth management-training program that positions youth for shift supervisory roles with higher wages. Last year, Juma employed 303 students in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Diego. Youth earned over $313,500 in wages with net revenue of $1,679,812 across all sites.
Activity 3
Replication: Juma is creating a National Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform that aligns the CSR strategies of major sports franchises, national vending and concessions companies, financial institutions, and other corporate partners toward a common vision: to create thousands of jobs for low-income youth at sports venues throughout the country. In fall 2011, Juma engaged Saatchi & Saatchi S, a nationally-recognized consulting firm that works with global brands to develop more effective approaches to corporate social responsibility. Working with Saatchi & Saatchi S, Juma conducted a market analysis of potential enterprise replication sites, as well as an internal audit of our program model to better articulate Juma's competitive advantage. The "discovery phase" of this project led to the creation of an enterprise replication guide, which included a SWOT analysis, market analysis, outline of the sequence by which new enterprise contracts should be secured, and description of human and financial resources necessary for launching a new enterprise in a variety of markets. In addition to the enterprise replication guide, Juma developed a modular pitch deck that can be adapted to a variety of stakeholders, including major concessionaires, sports teams, private foundations, and prospective corporate partners. The pitch deck and corresponding marketing collateral articulates Juma's value proposition, key initiatives, and strategies for implementing our CSR platform on a national scale. Juma's CSR platform challenges corporations to rethink their relationship with the communities in which they do business. The initiative demonstrates a replicable model that creates jobs and educational opportunity for low-income youth, as well as provides data points to support field-building efforts and more effective public policy.

IRS990/Description0Workforce Resources: Education and career services help Juma youth finish high school, prepare for and complete college and develop career goals that will set them on a path for long-term employment success. All youth work with a Youth Development Coordinator to determine their goals for higher education and the steps that will take them there. Participants also complete an academic needs assessment and companion education plan that considers their interests, skills, and work ambitions. Last year, 100% of Juma's high school seniors graduated from high school and 95% are enrolled in post-secondary education, defying the trends in their struggling districts. Through workshops, panel presentations, and tours with major employers, youth develop career goals that connect to their college choices. Juma also provides tutoring, SAT prep classes, academic guidance and assistance with understanding and completing every step of the college application and financial aid process to support their success in transitioning to post-secondary education. Juma recently began offering college services programming for youth to help participants navigate the college experience. Staff provide guidance, advanced financial coaching, financial aid and tax support, and assistance managing financial aid money and Individual Development Accounts. Overall, nearly 72% of our 2011 graduates are now attending 4-year colleges and universities. Juma deepened our relationship with FedEx to provide paid internship experiences and career laddering for Juma college youth. We also secured a relationship with Beyond12, a data management service that tracks staff-to-youth contacts and has the potential for students' transcript information to upload to their profiles automatically. Students may also use facebook to update their contact information and complete surveys in Beyond12. Financial literacy education and asset building services provide youth with the opportunity to develop lifelong savings habits and money management skills and to accumulate additional assets. A comprehensive series of workshops and panel presentations teach specific skills such as how to budget, handle debt and credit responsibilities, and evaluate banking services and options. The established curriculum also focuses on financial planning and goal setting, account management, financial aid, and investments. Youth work with staff to complete an individual financial assessment, develop a personal financial plan, and learn about topics ranging from filing their taxes to entrepreneurship education. Individual financial coaching is also provided to youth on an ongoing basis. Juma's asset building services help youth save additional resources for post-secondary education, and offer a means to leverage earned income. With Individual Development Accounts that provide a 2:1 match for every dollar saved, youth are able to set and meet target financial goals and accrue resources for their college expenses. Total youth wages increased last year despite a decrease in overall events due to the NBA lockout, no baseball playoffs, and no world series. Average youth earnings for all Juma participants maintaining active program enrollment for a 12-month period reached $1,650, surpassing our stated goal of $750. Juma also launched a new initiative, CollegeSet, with the support of BlackRock. CollegeSet partners Juma with other best-in-class college access nonprofits, and provides them with IDA college savings accounts and an online financial literacy education. Of the seven nonprofit partners in the initial cohort, four were in New York City, and three in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the first two years of the initiative, CollegeSet will open 1,000 savings accounts for low-income students throughout the country and invest more than $1.5 million into those accounts for tuition and other educational expenses.
