Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Investment earnings are not restricted and therefore are used for unrestricted purpose.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america requires the organization to report information regarding its exposure to various tax positions taken. The organization has determined whether any tax positions meet the recognition threshold and have measured the exposure to those tax positions. Management believes that the organization has adequately addressed all relevant tax positions and that there are no unrecorded tax liabilities. Federal and state tax authorities generally have the right to examine and audit the previous three years of tax returns filed. Any interest or penalties assessed to the organization are recorded in operating expenses. No interest or penalties from federal or state tax authorities were recorded in the accompanying financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0The Breakthrough Collaborative serves a network of 24 affiliates. Our core 6-year program provides academics, enrichment, relationships and socio-emotional learning support through middle and high school to 8,000 students. The program also provides pre-service teacher training program providing hundreds of hours of classroom and leadership learning every summer to more than 1,000 college students from across the country; 76% of whom have gone on to work in the field of education.Breakthrough Collaborative launches highly motivated students from under-resourced communities on the path to college and develops the next generation of inspirational teachers. Breakthroughs purpose is to reconcile the disparity between two unacceptable truths: 1) most people need a college degree to succeed in todays economy, and 2) there are long-standing and complex inequities that disproportionately prevent students of color and students from low-income communities from getting the resources and support they need to attend and graduate from college at the same rate as their more affluent peers. As a defining strategy in its approach to closing the opportunity gap, Breakthrough Collaboative has pioneered two unique models of instruction: students-teaching-students and teachers-training-teachers . These models unlock the extraordinary potential for students and teachers at all ages to engage each other in learning, teaching and leading. Breakthrough Collaborative is pleased to report the following updated college-going outcomes for our students who participate in the Breakthrough program at 24 local affiliates across the country: According to a spotlight report from the National Center for Education Statistics 2016 Condition of Education, students from families at the highest socioeconomic levels enrolled immediately in bachelor's degree programs at five times the rate of students from families at the lowest levels (60% and 12% respectively). Breakthrough students (80% of whom are eligible for free/reduced price lunches through the National School Lunch Program, and the vast majority of whom are students of color, first generation to attend college, live in single-parent households and/or speak a primary language other than English) are matching the 4-year enrollment rate of students at the highest socioeconomic levels. A brief summary of accomplishments during the one-year time period corresponding with this return: RenSTAR Student Assessments -- A national task force of program directors led by our national Director of Middle School Services, examined options for assessing summer learning gains, and agreed on the RenSTAR tool as the most appropriate and relevant system available, especially when used as one data point among several we will collect to provide a total picture. They are now developing a guide and coaching resources for site staff administering the test this summer and beyond. College Bound in a Box A national task force of directors, led by our national Director of High School Services, will roll out an expanded resource toolkit for affiliates who are expanding existing high-school (College Bound) programs, or adding them, in order to comply with the Collaboratives move toward standardization of six-year programming at all sites. Curriculum Updates The national Director of Middle School Services convened a consultant panel to update core curricula (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies) for all middle-school grade levels. The new curricula will be used during summer 2018Enhancement of Data Services -- 2017 saw the continued expansion of analytic tools, more effective/efficient collection mechanisms and enhanced support/coaching on affiliate data management by our national Data Manager. Stronger, more robust recruiting of outstanding college students to fill our 1,000 paid teaching fellowship positions for summer 2018: Through a combination of strategies engaging former teaching fellows to be Breakthrough campus ambassadors, de
