Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Investment earnings are not restricted and therefore are used for unrestricted purpose.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america requires the organization to report information regarding its exposure to various tax positions taken. The organization has determined whether any tax positions meet the recognition threshold and have measured the exposure to those tax positions. Management believes that the organization has adequately addressed all relevant tax positions and that there are no unrecorded tax liabilities. Federal and state tax authorities generally have the right to examine and audit the previous three years of tax returns filed. Any interest or penalties assessed to the organization are recorded in operating expenses. No interest or penalties from federal or state tax authorities were recorded in the accompanying financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0THROUGHOUT 2016, WE WORKED HARD TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR OUR HIGHLY MOTIVATED STUDENTS, WHILE INSPIRING THE EDUCATIONAL LEADERS OF THE FUTURE. BREAKTHROUGH SCHOLARS FREQUENTLY ATTEND UNDER-RESOURCED SCHOOLS, WHERE THE ODDS OF EVENTUALLY MATRICULATING INTO FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES, LET ALONE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL, ARE LOW. AMONG OUR MORE THAN 5,000 SUMMER STUDENTS, 95% ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR, 81% QUALIFY FOR A FREE/REDUCED- PRICE LUNCH, AND 72% WILL BE THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILIES TO ATTEND FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES. BREAKTHROUGH PROVIDES THE WRAP-AROUND SERVICES THAT PUT THESE STUDENTS ON THE PATH TO COLLEGE.OUR TEACHING RESIDENCY PROGRAMS RECRUIT AND TRAIN MORE THAN 1,000 ACCOMPLISHED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS EACH YEAR TO TEACH THESE YOUNG SCHOLARS. COMBINING RIGOROUS, ACADEMIC SUMMER PROGRAMS WITH SCHOOL-YEAR SUPPORT, WE PAIR OUR STUDENTS WITH NEAR-PEER MENTORS WHO MAKE THEIR COLLEGE DREAMS FEEL BOTH EXCITING AND POSSIBLE. IT'S OUR STUDENTS TEACHING STUDENTS MODEL THAT MAKES BREAKTHROUGH ENGAGING AND EFFECTIVE. OUR TEACHING RESIDNECY IS SO INSPIRING THAT A FULL 75% OF OUR TEACHING FELLOWS LEAVE BREAKTHROUGH AND GO ON TO CAREERS IN EDUCATION. FOR THOSE AMUNI WHO CHOOSE OTHER PATHS, THE EXPERIENCE PREPARES THEM TO SERVE AS LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND CHAMPIONS OF EDUCATION EQUITY.WE ACHIEVED GREAT PROGRESS IN 2015 IN MANY AREAS OF OUR PROGRAMMATIC SERVICES:WE CONTINUED TO IMPROVE OUR COLLABORATION AND LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK (CLF), A DIVERSE SET OF TOOLS FOR BREAKTHROUGH STUDENTS, INSTRUCTORS, AND STAFF WHICH FOSTERS LEADERSHIP SKILLS ACROSS A SET OF EIGHT COMPETENCY AREAS. IN 2015, BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCED HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS AND TRAININGS FOR IMPLEMENTATION DURING AFFILIATE SUMMER PROGRAMMING. WE THEN SHARED NEW TOOLS FOR STAFF SELECTION, SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAMMING, AND TEACHING FELLOW SELECTION AND EVALUATION AT OUR NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER. WE WERE THRILLED BY THE POSITIVE RESPONSE TO THE CLF AND LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH AFFILIATE SITES TO IMPROVE ON OUR PROGRESS.BREAKTHROUGH ALSO SCALED UP EFFORTS TO RECRUIT AND TRAIN INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES ACROSS THE COLLABORATIVE. IN 2015, BREAKTHROUGH HIRED AND TRAINED 140 PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS AS INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES IN 25 CITIES. WE EXPANDED OUR INSTRUCTIONAL COACH RECRUITMENT STRATEGY THROUGH OUR PIPELINE PARTNERS NETWORK, WITH AN EYE SPECIFICALLY TOWARD ATTRACTING MORE STEM APPLICANTS. WE GREW OUR APPLICANT POOL - AND INCREASED THE SELECTIVITY OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS - THROUGH AN ACCESSIBLE ONLINE APPLICATION, REDESIGNED MARKETING COLLATERAL AND INFORMATIONAL WEBINARS. WITH NEWLY CENTRALIZED TRAINING SESSIONS, INCLUDING EIGHT HOURS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THE ENHANCED INSTRUCTIONAL COACH PROGRAM MOVES US FORWARD IN OUR GOAL TO BETTER PREPARE THE NEXT GENERATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS.WE ALSO STRENGTHENED OUR ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS. IN JANUARY 2015, WE HOSTED THE BREAKTHROUGH LEADERSHIP SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON D.C. ALUMNI RECEIVED VALUABLE CAREER DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM AND MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM 15 TEACHING RESIDENCIES - ALL MEMBERS OF OUR PIPELINE PARTNERS PROGRAM. 2015 ALSO MARKED THE BETA LAUNCH OF THE ONLINE BREAKTHROUGH PORTAL, WHICH OFFERS ALUMNI CAREER RESOURCES AND AN ALUMNI DIRECTORY, WHILE ALSO HOSTING OUR TEACHING FELLOW APPLICATION AND SURVEYS. ENGAGING WITH BREAKTHROUGH ALUMNI THROUGH THESE ACTIVITIES IS KEY TO OUR MISSION OF DEVELOPOING THE NEXT GENERATION OF EDUCATORS.
