Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The endowment is comprised of several funds set aside for donor directed purposes including operations, opera house maintenance, wattis tickets fund, new productions, student subscriptions, principal artists, education, and other programs.

PART X, LINE 2:

The association is a not-for-profit organization pursuant to internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) and the california equivalent legislation and, accordingly, is exempt from federal and state income taxes on income related to its tax exempt purposes. Accounting guidance for accounting for uncertainties in income taxes prescribes the minimum recognition threshold a tax position is required to meet before being recognized in the financial statements. It also provides guidance on the recognition of income tax assets and liabilities, classification of current and deferred income tax assets and liabilities, accounting for interest and penalties associated with tax positions, accounting for income taxes in interim periods, and income tax disclosures. This standard also requires additional disclosure of the beginning and ending unrecognized tax benefits and details regarding the uncertainties that may cause the unrecognized benefits to increase or decrease within a twelve month period. The association's policy for evaluating uncertain tax positions is a two-step process. The first step is to evaluate the tax position for recognition by determining if the weight of available evidence indicates that it is more-likely-than-not that the position will be sustained upon audit, including resolution of related appeals or litigations processes, if any. The second step is to measure the tax benefit or liability as the largest amount that is more than 50% likely to be realized or incurred upon settlement. Based on an analysis prepared by the association, it was determined that the association believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements.
