Activity 2

Electronic media - the objective of this initiative is to reach a new audience with digital content via radio broadcasts, simulcasts, web videos, operavision and a cinema series. Classical radio station, kdfc, rebroadcasts the opera's full season to an audience of approximately 25,000 listeners per title. Wfmt rebroadcasts radio programs to a national and international audience of approximately 1.5 million. The "opera in the ballpark' at at&t park in partnership with the san francisco giants featured a free live hd simulcast of verdi's rigoletto to an audience of approximately 27,000. The grand opera cinema series released four new titles to regional and international movie theaters and performing arts venues including george and ira gershwin's porgy and bess, verdi's aida, boris godunov by modest mussorgsky and donizetti's lucrezia borgia. In 2010, the company launched a partnership with kqed public television to air grand operas recorded live in high definition at the opera house. The kqed series for this year included the magic flute, il trittico, salome and otello. In may 2013, the opera announced a business partnership with euroarts music international, one of the world's leading and most prestigious distributors of classical programming for international television and home video distribution of high-definition san francisco opera productions. Initial plans include the release of six productions recorded at the war memorial opera house over two years. Web videos are included on the opera's website which include opera excerpts, interviews and opera talks. Operavision, offered at select performances, gives balcony audiences a better view of the stage with the use of screens which provide closeup and mid-range ensemble shots in high-definition video with supertitles.

Activity 3

Opera center (training and professional development) - the opera supports an internationally recognized training and professional development program, the adler fellowship program. The adler fellowship program is a performance-oriented residency of two years offering advanced young artists intensive individual training, coaching, professional seminars and a wide range of performance opportunities. Adler fellows gain valuable professional experience by performing roles of increasing importance in the opera's main-stage season. In addition to performances on the main stage, selected adler fellows were featured in the schwabacher recital debut series. The adler season culminates in an adler fellows concert. Alumni from the adler program include sopranos laura claycomb, nicolle foland, nancy gustafson, mary mills, patricia racette, ruth ann swenson and deborah voigt; mezzo-sopranos zheng cao and dolora zajick; countertenor brian asawa; baritones mark delavan and david okerlund; and bass-baritones monte pederson and john relyea. The san francisco opera also supports the merola opera program for aspiring professionals which offers up-and-coming singers, coach-accompanists and stage directors the opportunity of intense study and performance during an eleven-week summer program. The opera's commitment to providing music education and enrichment opportunities to students, teachers, young audiences and adults, continued in a myriad of school and family programs and online resources. The san francisco opera and opera guild bring opera and music education to students and individuals throughout northern california.
