Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Trec's vision is leaders, organizations, and diverse coalitions working effectively for environmental protection, conservation, and sustainability in western north america. Trec cultivates effectiveness by providing premier capacity building services delivered in-depth and over time.

Form 990

Form 990, part iv, lines 12a and 12b: trec obtained independent audited financial statements for the years of 2014, 2016, and 2018. The financial statements were reviewed by independent accountants in 2013, 2015, and 2017.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Members of the board of directors serve on a volunteer basis.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Collaborations program: expert assistance to organizations in planning and working with organizations to collaborate effectively; facilitation of meetings of coalitions, conducted trainings on best practices for collaborations; held advocacy and government affairs training that addressed working with federal agencies and cultivating relationships. Eighty-nine individuals from 49 organizations participated in 2-day event. Added a 1-day workshop to support grantees in deepening understanding of indigenous reconciliation and work in this area, and 20 individuals from 11 organizations participated. Trec held a facilitation training workshop for 19 individuals from 12 organizations and also provided a collaboration workshop for 19 representing 5 collaborations from 14 organizations.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Fundraising assistance program: the fundraising assistance program helped organizations to raise money while they diversify and stabilize their fundraising base. Past participants have reported substantial increases in revenue, membership, and major donors after completing the fundraising for the future. Trec held more than 7 training sessions in 2018 for 11 organizations. These web- based training sessions are supplemented with extensive individual consultation and coaching and hands-on "homework" assignments. This precedent-setting combination has allowed participants to learn crucial skills, network with their peers, and apply new information to their organizations

Form 990, Part X

The organization has adopted the principles of fasb asu no. 2016-1 (asc 958) for its audited financial statements for the period ended december 31, 2018. To date, form 990 and its associated schedules have not been updated to reflect changes made by this standard. Thus, we have included the net asset categories in our audited financial statements on existing form 990, part x, lines 27-29 as follows: net assets without donor restrictions 835,032 net assets with donor restrictions 70,000 --------- total net assets 905,032 ========= unrestricted net assets 835,032 temporarily restricted net assets 70,000 --------- total net assets 905,032 =========

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 2, Part V, Line 4

The board has designated assets to provide for an operating reserve which can be used for operations if needed due to unexpected circumstances, such as reductions in grant funding. In addition, the board also designated assets for an entrepreneurial fund, the purpose of which is to provide funding for staff to pursue projects that are outside routine, planned operations. Temporarily restricted net assets are donor-restricted and will be released from restrictions when donor restrictions are satisfied.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Training resources for the environmental community has received an internal revenue service exemption from federal income taxes under section 501(c) (3). Accordingly, no provision or liability for income taxes has been provided in the accompanying financial statements.
