Activity 2

The Be the Match Registry (the "Registry") is the largest and most racially and ethnically diverse registry of its kind in the world. In the United States, on average, 48,000 new potential donors join the Registry each month, with more than 576,000 new potential donors joining in 2010. Since 1987, NMDP has facilitated more than 43,000 transplants providing patients with a second chance at life. In 2010, NMDP facilitated 4,075 bone marrow and 1,153 cord blood transplants. NMDP facilitated transplants have increased at a compound growth rate of 13% since fiscal year 2002 and transplant volume has more than doubled since 2003.See Schedule O.The Registry achieved significant milestones in fiscal year 2010. Adult donors on the Registry reached 8 million by the end of fiscal year 2010 (more than doubling in ten years), and the cord blood registry surpassed 100,000 CBUs. The Registry obtains funding under cooperative agreements with the Department of the Navy for certain blood-typing costs.

Activity 3

NMDP facilitates extensive research and scientific services for improving outcomes through clinical research. This work includes establishing and maintaining an extensive database for researchers, conducting observational studies, and planning and facilitating clinical trials that assess trends and therapies. During FY10, approximately $26.1 million was used to fund research programs to improve the marrow donation process and advance transplant science.
