Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Youth education number of students served in erc youth programs: 1050 in person, estimated 150 remotely. Number of erc-led education programs: 75. Building on over a decade of partnerships with the local school district and local naturalists, the erc youth education programs had a very successful year of expanding reach and impact. School programs were consistently booked months in advance at the request of local teachers. While ultimately our ecocamps for young environmental leaders were cancelled due to covid-19 community spread in the late summer, the erc was able to provide outlets for student environmental leaders to continue to learn about the environment and serve their community through outdoor service projects and take-home environmental education enrichment kits. Highlights from this year included: learning about noxious weeds and invasive plant species, the impact of beavers on the local landscape, water quality and dog waste, animal tracking, the lunar cycle, and a new multiday snow science workshop. In accordance with long-term erc educational strategic goals, we were able to offer multiple programs that spanned multiple days. These more intensive programs allow erc educators to incorporate classroom and field lessons and make a lasting impact on students. During the spring semester of 2020, local blaine county schools were held remotely due to community spread of covid-19. In addition to adapting ggm courses to an online format at the request of local teachers, erc staff also created supplementary materials for teachers and parents to use by publishing weekly newsletters with local, relevant, environmental education news throughout covid-19 stay-at-home orders. Activities included snow science measurements, recycled art projects, earth day ideas, nature art, nature riddles, and backyard bird bingo. Teachers, parents, and students reached out to the erc throughout the spring semester to request materials and share finished projects.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Pick up for the planet (pup) amount of dog waste picked up through pup: 10,000 pounds. For over 10 years, the erc has collaborated with the us forest service, bureau of land management (blm) and other user groups to reduce the negative environmental, health, and aesthetic impacts of unattended dog waste on local trails. Today, erc provides educational signage, baggies, and weekly bin servicing to 16 highly-trafficked trailheads valley-wide. In order to meet the unprecedented demand this summer driven by the surge of trail use by residents and visitors, the erc increased bin servicing to biweekly pickups. Erc summer fellows flagged and picked up dog waste on trails. We also sponsored original field research by local students to collect data on trail use and dog waste. The information collected will inform future dog waste projects and bin placement.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Recycling outreach and connecting people to nature recycling outreach - the erc continued to collect over 1000 pounds of batteries, small electronics, and plastic film for recycling throughout the year. After the 26th annual clean sweep was postponed in may due to covid- 19, we held a socially-distanced "spooky" clean sweep in late october with over 90 people in attendance. Connecting people to nature - programs that instill an appreciation for our natural environment in residents and visitors and provide a venue for conversations on important environmental issues. Programs this year heavily focused on remote learning opportunities through online platforms, as well as socially-distanced environmental service projects.

AFTER SEVERAL WET YEARS, KNAPWEED WAS PARTICULARLY PREVALENT THIS YEAR. AS NEW ALTERNATIVE METHODS ARE INTRODUCED, THE ERC WILL BE RESEARCHING BEST PRACTICES AND HELPING OUR COMMUNITY UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF MANAGING WEEDS WITHOUT THE OVERUSE OF PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES. THIS SUMMER THE ERC SUMMER STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS HELD SEVERAL INVASIVE WEED PULLS TO KEEP KNAPWEED FROM SPREADING NEAR RIPARIAN AREAS WHERE PESTICIDE USE IS DISCOURAGED CLOSE TO THE RIVER OR WETLANDS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0YOUTH EDUCATION NUMBER OF STUDENTS SERVED IN ERC YOUTH PROGRAMS: 1050 IN PERSON, ESTIMATED 150 REMOTELY.
