“Youth education growing great minds: in 53 programs, we served 1244 pre-school through high school students at public and private schools in the 2021 - 2022 school year. Throughout the school year, erc staff worked to adapt existing programs to provide small-group, in-person programs upon the request of teachers and partner organizations. Science after school: in partnership with two major after school care providers, the wood river ymca and the ketchum recreation program, the erc adapted science after school curriculum to offer hands-on science learning experiences for students. In 26 programs, we served 281 students with weekly hands-on environmental education activities. Ecocamp (outdoor leadership overnight camp): the erc was able to offer one weeklong summer session for 5 participants in grades 5th-7th. Spring exploration series: after two years of covid-related cancellations, the ses was back in schools for spring 2022. Over 600 2nd and 3rd grade students were served in six sessions that brought zoo idaho, the peregrine fund, and working dogs for conservation into schools for live demonstrations.”
“Pick up for the planet (pup) amount of dog waste picked up through pup: over 10,000 pounds. Over 30,000 free biodegradable bags provided at 13+ public trailheads. For over 10 years, the erc has collaborated with the us forest service, bureau of land management (blm) and other user groups to reduce the negative environmental, health, and aesthetic impacts of unattended dog waste on local trails. Today, erc provides educational signage, baggies, and weekly bin servicing to highly-trafficked trailheads valley-wide. In order to meet the unprecedented demand this summer driven by the surge of trail use by residents and visitors, the erc increased bin servicing to biweekly pickups. Erc summer fellows flagged and picked up dog waste on trails. We also sponsored original field research by local students to collect data on trail use and dog waste. The information collected will inform future dog waste projects and bin placement.”
“Pesticide action in 63 programs, we reached over 1800 participants, reaching over 280 participants through 33 direct action service programs such as weed warriors, school service days, and cleansweep, as well 1200 youth and adults through community recycling and composting education at popular public events. At 35 public events, erc staff collected over 2000 pounds of recycling and 900 pounds of compost. Through 10 programs conducted with community partners such as the wood river trails coalition, the climate action coalition, and the us forest service, we reached 665 adults and youth with a variety of targeted environmental education and information on topics such as tackling invasive weed spread, respecting local wildlife, and local recycling protocols. 20,000 pounds of garments out of the landfill through a erc partnership with local thrift stores that connected garment donations that could not be resold within the wood river valley with alternative avenues for their reuse or resale within southern idaho. Erc staff and volunteers cleared over 2500 pounds of invasive weeds all across blaine county.”
“Recycling outreach and connecting people to nature recycling outreach - the erc continued to collect over 2,000 pounds of batteries, small electronics, and plastic film for recycling throughout the year. Connecting people to nature - programs that instill an appreciation for our natural environment in residents and visitors and provide a venue for conversations on important environmental issues.”
