Youth education our 2014 youth education programming continued erc's legacy of empowering youth through science-based knowledge. We are working to inspire a life-long passion for science and creating the future caretakers of our natural environment. School programs are offered during school hours as well as after school and include our spring education series, growing great minds, and science after school. Other youth programs include ecocamp (three weeks of day camps and two weeks of overnight camps each with a different theme), as well as community collaborative programs offered for other organizations to help supplement and enrich their already existing programs. Youth education programs account for over 50% of the erc's work and in 2014 reached more than 2700 students.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Pup & recycling the goal of the erc's dog waste pick up program, pup, is to mitigate the negative environmental and health effects associated with the improper disposal of pet waste on our local trail systems through education and action. Clean sweep, the erc's valley-wide clean-up day began in 1994 and has resulted in over 20 tons of trash being picked up by local citizens. The event, which is focused on the cities of bellevue, hailey, ketchum and sun valley is sposored by local businesses through donations and volunteer assistance. The clean sweep sponsorship funds are then used to help facilitate recycling at several large local events. Both programs require a designated staff person to pick up & properly dispose of the dog waste at the trail heads and facilitate recycling, marketing and program materials.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

Pesticide action in 2014, the erc took over the work of the pesticide action network of blaine county (panbc) and incorporated it into our pesticide action program. The goal of this program is to reduce and when possible eliminate the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers particularly in areas where youth play. In 2014, the erc helped construct an insectary at the sawtooth national recreation area headquarters that is growing knapweed (noxious weed)-eating weevils (insects) and will be offered to the community free of charge in the summer of 2016. The erc also hired a summer intern to research current integrated pest management practices being utilized in the valley and then prepared a written report that will be used to help update the erc's weed and pest guide.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 31

Other programs the erc offered many different programs for the community in 2014, with a total number of 4,800 participants. These programs included nature workshops such as birding, wildflower, and winter tracking; collaborative community programs for local businesses, non-profit partners, and other interested groups, as well as erc deck parties and gallery walks with various environmental themes.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5PUP & RECYCLING THE GOAL OF THE ERC'S DOG WASTE PICK UP PROGRAM, PUP, IS TO MITIGATE THE NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF PET WASTE ON OUR LOCAL TRAIL SYSTEMS THROUGH EDUCATION AND ACTION.
