Form 990, Part III

Youth education through hands-on learning, the erc inspires passion and empowers students with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to become the next generation of our environmental stewards and leaders. Programs include in-school and after-school programs (e.g. Spring exploration series, growing great minds, and science after school); overnight summer camps (ecocamp); and programs with collaborative organizations (e.g. Local libraries, the hunger coalition, wood river ymca, and more). Youth education programs account for nearly 45% of the erc's work. In 2018, 3,800+ youth were reached in over 130 programs - a 50% increase in reach and a 75% increase in programs offered compared to 2017. 95% of programs were offered free of charge. Pick up for the planet (pup) this program, in collaboration with the forest service, bureau of land managment, blaine county recreation district, and other user groups, lessens the environmental, aesthetic, and health impacts of unattended dog waste on local trails. The erc provides educational signage, weekly bin maintenance, and free dog waste bags to 16 popular valley-wide trailheads. In 2018, we engaged local public and private school students to conduct trail clean ups and create educational resources for the community. In 2018, the erc diverted more than 300 33-gallon bags of dog waste from the trails - a 200% increase compared to 2017. Pesticide action this program reduces the use of pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers in the wood river valley. The erc advocates for integrated pest management practices where non-chemical alternatives are considered first and foremost. The erc maps and monitors noxious weed populations, as well as maintains the wood river bio-control insectary, which is growing spotted knapweed-eating insects. We also host educational workshops and awareness events, facilitate noxious weed pulls, and native plant seedings, and create educational resources. In 2018, the erc reached 1,000+ participants in free programming - a 100% increase in reach compared to 2017. Connecting people to nature programs that instill an appreciation for our natural environment in residents and visitors and provide a venue for conversations on important environmental issues. Programs include birding and tracking workshops, snowshoe tours, nature walks, lectures, film showings, gallery walks, our annual street party for the planet, and more. In 2018, we reach 900+ people in over 40 programs - a 145% increase in reach and a 15% increase in programs offered compared to 2017. 75% of programs were offered free of charge or with a suggested donation. Recycling outreach and action in collaboration with blaine county's 5b recycles and clear creek disposal, this program conducts education on best recycling practices, facilitates recycling at community events, and offers a collection site for several recyclable items. In 2018, 17,000+ community members were reached in over 50 events - a 40% increase in reach and 70% increase in programs offered compared to 2017. 5,500 gallons of glass, aluminum, and plastic were diverted from the landfill at local events - an increase of 60% compared to 2017. Additionally, 1,000 pounds of batteries and electronics were collected at the erc office for recycling through 150 individual drop offs.
