IRS990/Description0The Global Community Trust's project, The Coffee Trust:Description of the Guatemalan region:The Ixil area is affected by poverty and exclusion and still suffers wounds inflicted by the Guatemalan civil war. The average inhabitant has 3.3 years of formal education and the illiteracy rate is 39% (60.48% for women). Girls still have much less access to education than their male counterparts, and the overall quality of this education in the Ixil area is very low. Health care in the Ixil area is limited to 1 doctor per 8,215 inhabitants. The highest cause of mortality is from acute respiratory infections caused by heavy smoke inside the home. According to the Third Census of Height Among School Children in the 1st Grade, in the Ixil region the growth of 76.9% of students has been stunted. Furthermore, according to the study of food insecurity in Guatemalan municipalities, where being in 1st place denotes the least secure, the town of Nebaj is in 7th place, Chajul is in 9th place and Cotzal is in 15th place of 133. Rural areas are particularly insecure due to their high incidence of poverty (income of $2.00/day) and extreme poverty (income of $1.00/day).From the beginning the proposition was to focus on the area of education, especially for women and youth, in order to foment the development of skills and leadership, which are critical to fomenting change within the family and within the community as a whole. This focus is based on the premise that educated women promote education and good health for their children, and also access alternative forms of income to improve the living conditions of their family. In response to the 2010 diagnostic a strategic plan was developed for the Ixil region. Sensitive to the overwhelming challenges facing the region, the strategic plan raised the bar on its education focus to include a comprehensive development strategy that also focused on health care, food security and economic development. While education remains the base upon which The Coffee Trust approaches its work, without a comprehensive approach recognizing other critical areas of need, overcoming the deep seeded poverty in the region would remain elusive.Due to the many challenges faced by the Ixil area, The Coffee Trust decided to work with Fundacin Ixil, a Guatamalan nonprofit organization, and designed its 2010-2012 strategic plan. In the future,The Coffee Trust will directly support each local organization, including Fundacin Ixil, to strengthen their capacities and develop their organizational and financial sustainability. In 2012, The Coffee Trust's accomplishments consisted of scholarships to support formal education starting from the middle school level up until an undergraduate university degree. Of these, the middle and high school scholarship program of Limitless Horizons Ixil and the Kukuy program for girls based on the Starfish One by One model have proven the most effective in addressing the Ixil area's needs. In addition to providing access to secondary education, these programs have promoted personal and professional development and have managed to generate a higher level of achievement among their students, especially in the case of Limitless Horizons Ixil. It is hoped that Limitless Horizons Ixil, along with the Philanthropiece Foundation, will become involved in the administration of the Kukuy program for 2013, since they have experience and a track record of success in managing this type of program. The Coffee Trust has also granted scholarships to study in the universities of UVG Solol, URL Quich and URL Quetzaltenango, which are supporting the education of youth who can then bring their skills back to their home community. Of these programs, the UVG Solol program has presented the best results since, on top of being the first program established, its beneficiaries have gotten the most support through tutoring sessions and consistent visits. Additionally, The Coffee Trust has identified the INTECAP technical training

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation4Client Note 1 - Continued - Schedule O - Program Service AccomplishmentsThe Health and Food Security program through the Institute of Rural Development (IDR), which is based on the methodology of the international development organization World Neighbors, implements the Health and Food Security Program. Three primary activities have been selected to initiate this program: safe stoves, egg-laying chickens, and family gardens. This year the program component of strengthening community organization was implemented by supporting each group in its organization, training of promoters, and in the creation of community networks to generate stronger health and hygiene initiatives in the community of Sotzil. The program serves 108 families from Sotzil. In 2012, 57 families directly benefitted from this program: 22 from stoves, 27 from family gardens, and 8 from raising hens. Including the families that joined the program in 2011 and remain program beneficiaries, the program attends to 108 families and indirectly benefits 648 individuals. $27,750.00 USD was invested in this initiative. The Coffee Trust supported Fundacin Ixil in the implementation of 2 programs in partnerships with other NGOs:"Delivering packages of stoves, filters, pots of ground maize (nixtamal), and flooring to 50 families with support from Helps international and The Philanthropiece Foundation. "Construction of 5 homes with Construcasa for 5 families for which Construcasa is in charge of logistics, and financing 75% of the total cost while Fundacin Ixil organizes the group and the payments.Economic Development:The Women's Association of Chajul is a womens organization that promotes the development of Ixil women. It implements 2 programs, a program for the production and exportation of traditional weavings and a microcredit program. The objective of the microcredit program is to improve the living conditions of Ixil women through access to microcredit and financial savings. The objective of the weaving program is to give artisan women the means to generate their own income through the production and commercialization of their products. This program benefits 488 women, with 2928 indirect beneficiaries. The total amount contributed to the project was $58,000.The Chajulense Association is an organization that since 1990 has primarily produced and exported organic, fair trade coffee. Since 2006, it also produces and exports honey. The association consists of 1500 coffee producers and 71 honey producers. During 2012, The Coffee Trust contributed to strengthening the honey program, specifically by providing support and technical assistance to prepare coordinators and producers for potential production problems that may be encountered and for dealing with the effects of climate change. The amount contributed was $10,000. The Training Center in Batzul administrated by Fundacin Ixil is undergoing rehabilitation. The goal is to have adequate infrastructure to use the space for trainings, talks, and various activities that are vital to the region. This space could be very valuable, if used right. Its greatest inconvenience is its location far from the population centers, which also means that it is far from public transportation. In 2012, the space was used for various activities including vocational education, activities for the Kukuy Program, and it was solicited as an activity space by other organizations.
