Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of project grad usa (grad) is to ensure a quality public school education for students in low-income areas so that more students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, graduate from high school prepared to excel in college and beyond. Grad focuses its efforts exclusively on chronically low-performing schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The mission of each grad academy, as part of the grad academies network of project grad usa, is to provide all students with an outstanding 21st century education, to prepare them for college and career success, and to inspire them to become engaged participants in our democracy.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Project grad usa received funding from the bill & melinda gates foundation to pilot its college readiness initiative in atlanta with three high schools and two feeder middle schools. The model is designed to increase the number of students completing high school prepared to succeed in college and career. Grad implemented a summer bridge experience to facilitate the transition from 8th to 9th grade for students in the pilot during both years of the grant. Project grad provided tutoring support in literacy and math to the targeted middle school students and conducted professional development for their teachers. Project grad usa staff provided technical assistance to the literacy and math coaches in the target middle schools to build capacity in the system. Project grad usa also built it capacity in the national headquarters with the hiring of three staff members.
Activity 3
The pennsylvania department of education (pde), through the college access grant (cacgp), will again partner with project grad and the pennsylvania higher education assistance agency (pheaa) to deliver coordinated college preparatory services that have both depth and breadth, amounting to $3.5 million per year for five years. Depth will be provided through intensive services delivered by project grad usa to students in twelve low-income and below-proficient high schools, and their feeder middle schools. Through this model, project grad will provided a full-time, on the ground, college access presence in the chosen school districts.as reflected in the annual performance report submitted to the u.s. Department of education, the pennsylvania college access challenge grant program (a partnership between pde, pheaa and grad) provided 51,576 direct services to 7,043 students at 11 focus high schools and their feeder middle schools. This program reached 2,650 students through tutoring, and presented 280 financial aid workshops for 14,000 parents across pennsylvania. It also conducted 48 college tours and 44 college forums that assisted 932 students and 2,583 students, respectively.the pennsylvania office of postsecondary and higher education will ensure cacgp implementation, effective program delivery, quality control and will support buy-in with the targeted districts and the statewide effort.
