Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To prevent the suffering and death of companion animals and to enrich the human-animal bond by providing excellent, accessible, and affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Houston Mobile Clinic Project provides free spay-neuter surgeries for the cats and dogs of income-qualifying people in their own neighborhoods. The two clinics that constitute this project sterilized 5,899 animals in FY 2012, turning away 1,490 for lack of space. Some highlights of the fiscal year are as follows. The mobile clinic neutered forty-seven male cats during our Neuter Scooter for a Nickel promotion as part of World Spay Day. Neuter Scooter is a program that has neutered male cats for five cents each for eighteen years. The clinic also held two special cat days, totaling forty-eight cats sterilized. The clinic's valuable aid in the area dubbed the Corridor of Cruelty and Neglect continued throughout the year, enabling us to sterilize 268 animals there. This shameful place earned this name because it is a dumping ground for sick, injured, abused dogs (mostly), who live in horrible conditions. Not only did we make eleven trips there to sterilize rescued animals as well as those living with people in the nearby neighborhood, but we were also able to promote awareness of the need to prevent such places from existing by spaying and neutering and treating animals humanely. We made fourteen trips out of county, totaling 270 spays and neuters in one trip to Liberty County, one trip to Brazoria County, and twelve trips to Fort Bend County. The mobile clinics Zip Code project continued our Zip Code Project for community cats in 77011, which spayed and neutered 1,059 community cats and ninety-eight in adjacent 77023, who were returned to the location where they were picked up. The total number of cats sterilized in 77011 since the beginning of the project in October 2010 is 1,428, and our promise to PetSmart Charities is to sterilize 1,840 by December 2012, which is 70 percent of the estimated community cat population there and sufficient to stabilize the population, according to studies. The idea is to do enough spay-neuter in one limited area to more effectively stop the cycle of reproduction among free-roaming cats, who are responsible for 78.6 percent of kitten births in the U.S., according to Julie Levy, DVM. Only an estimated 2 percent of these cats have been sterilized. We expect to see intake and killing at BARC go down from this zip code as well as complaint calls to the shelter about cats. The project seems to be making a difference beyond cutting down on overpopulation and disease, and there are more benefits to the cats and community that he we originally thought as residents are now taking greater responsibility for the cats.
Activity 3
The San Antonio Mobile Clinic Project sterilized 3,541 animals in FY 2012; 99.6 percent of those were free, an increase of 6.2 percent from last year. The clinic made 126 trips to forty-one unique sites, including eighteen new ones. We averaged 28.1 animals per trip, thus maximizing the efficiency of the clinic. Overall, we were forced to turn away 444 animals. Since 2005, we have increased the clinic's free surgeries every year. Special events on the mobile clinic include the following. Spay Week was held July 25-30, and three events resulted in ninety-five free surgeries on our mobile van. The Nip & Tuck Organization in Castroville, Texas, sponsored two Nip & Tuck days in August and one in March. One was in Hondo at which thirty-five cats and dogs were sterilized, and two others in Devine in August and March sterilized thirty-six and forty-four, respectively. We had our first spay-neuter clinic in the SNAP parking lot in January, which was very successful in that forty dogs and cats were sterilized. Our February participation in World Spay Day spayed forty female cats and thirty-four female dogs and neutered one male cat. On a special trip to SARA Sanctuary on March 5th, we spayed and neutered twenty-five animals. Then on March 24th, we spayed or neutered twenty-seven animals at the Bark in the Park event. And we participated in the District 4 Spay-Neuter Week Event on March 26th, sterilizing twenty-three animals. Fourteen trips out of Bexar County resulted in a total of 529 dogs and cats being sterilized for free who otherwise would not have been. Funded by The Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, we made two trips to Comal County (Canyon Lake Animal Shelter) and three trips to Bandera County (Pipe Creek Community Center twice and The Plaza once), for a total of 144 spays and neuters. We made six trips to Medina County (two to Hondo and four to Devine) for 213 sterilizations, sponsored by Nip & Tuck in Castroville. A trip to SARA Sanctuary in Guadalupe County yielded twenty-five animals fixed. On May 6-7 and June 4-5, the mobile went to Laredo for two-day rounds of sterilizations. Sponsored by the city of Laredo health department, we fixed eighty-four cats in May. Gateway Gatos lobbied for the funding, arranged for SNAP to come and stay over, and got the cats to the clinic. The June trip was funded by the Laredo Animal Protective Society, during which we spayed or neutered sixty-three dogs and cats. Animal Care Services sponsored twenty-two trips of the mobile clinic and individual surgeries totaling 1,868 cats and dogs in FY2012. After December, we continued to be funded by ACS but did not dedicate whole trips to that contract. In May we began working with Best Friends on a community cat TNR project in fourteen zip codes through a grant made to several spay-neuter groups in San Antonio. So far the mobile clinic has spayed or neutered ten cats and the stationary clinic 143. Overall, eight organizations sponsored thirty-eight trips of the mobile clinic, which sterilized 662 animals.

IRS990/Description0SNAP has reduced-cost stationary surgery/wellness clinics in Houston and San Antonio. In FY 2012, the Houston Spay-Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinic sterilized 13,411 dogs and cats, and the San Antonio Spay-Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinic did 8,493. In addition, the San Antonio clinic saw 4,256 wellness patients, and the clinic in Houston treated 12,457. The clinic had funding to do eleven 50 percent off days, a free dachshund day, a free cat day, a free Chi & Gato day, and a free veterans day. On World Spay Day, the clinic sterilized seventy-five animals. Altogether these special days sterilized 985 dogs and cats who likely would not have been otherwise. The Houston clinic sterilized fifty-four animals on World Spay Day and continued its successful Animal Aid program, which began in 2000 to offer free sterilizations, free wellness exams, and wellness products at cost to the dogs and cats living with people affected by HIV/AIDS. This program also involves a collaborative effort with Pet Patrol to offer free transportation and/or pickup services between the client's home and our clinics. We treated 116 animals brought in by eighty-four clients in FY 2012.
