Empower the bluegrass to create a sustainable environment.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Bluegrass PRIDE provides resources and education to community groups and citizens throughout Central Kentucky. Most of PRIDE's programs focus on energy efficiency, water quality and solid waste issues. Fiscal year 2011-2012 included the following successes: Live Green Lexington (LGL) Partner Program* Worked with 390 businesses and 123 apartment complexes (over 17,000 units) to recycle a total of 17,80 tons of material * Worked to increase public event recycling and 'Litter Free' events to 30 events in Lexington, 6 of which were zero waste events. * Enlisted 82 businesses and 36 apartment complexes as Water Partners * Hosted the second annual Go Green, Save Green workshop for 126 apartment and business managers.* Created the Live Green Lexington Games for the City of Lexington and had 29 Businesses enlist. *Litter Abatement Distributed 45 boxes of trash bags and 10 boxes of gloves for area litter cleanups * Sent warning letters to 917 litter bugs * Public Relations * Incorporated social media into outreach strategy, including a Facebook page (2,600 Friends) and a Twitter (1,100 followers) account * Distributed press releases throughout the service area and received 133 media hits from various counties* Volunteers Recruited 22 new volunteers * Received 100 hours of volunteer work on cleanups, school outreach and community outreach programs* Energy Worked with 10 volunteers to weatherize two nonprofit residential facilities * Provided outreach and information to 2,679 people * Energy audit kits checked out 38 times * Enlisted 77 businesses and 25 apartment complex as Energy Partners * Managed over $200,000 in grant funding to arts nonprofits for energy efficient retrofits* Distributed 1,143 LED exit sign retrofit kits which will save nonprofits $274,000/year Rain Barrel Program Hosted the tenth annual Roll Out the Rain Barrel Program and Rain Barrel Reception * 25 decorated rain barrels were displayed throughout Central Kentucky * The program generated media attention about local water quality issues * Household Hazardous Waste* distributed enough paint crystals to properly dispose of 552 gallons of paint * Bluegrass PRIDE distritbuted commnunity grant totaling $95,009

IRS990/Description0Bluegrass PRIDE provides education resources to schools and non-formal educators throughout the PRIDE service area. Fiscal year 2010-2012 included the following successes: Live Green Lexington Partner Schools, Waste Reduction * Worked with 109 K-12 schools, preschools, daycare facilities, and community youth organizations in Fayette County to start or expand recycling programs while conducting 1,017 activities with almost 43,000 students to promote recycling and waste reduction * Performed 56 waste audits (Dumpster Dives) * Conducted 173 litter abatement activities for 4,380 students, and 86 composting activities for 2,218 students* Live Green Lexington Partner Schools, Water Quality *Worked with 73 K-12 schools, preschools, daycare facilities, and community youth organizations to conduct 625 activities for 16,739 students * Led 33 water quality improvement projects with 585 students * Resource Library Bluegrass PRIDE's resource library is available to assist in the teaching of environmental topics. PRIDE has developed topic-related buckets that may include books, activities, interactive CDs, videos, websites to be used with the topic, human resources, field trip ideas and other resources * These resources were used by almost 5,000 students *Outdoor Days planned and implemented a series of six outdoor learning days for fourth grade students in six central Kentucky counties * Environmental Education PRIDE taught 411 hands on activities in counties surrounding Fayette to almost 18,000 students. Bluegrass PRIDE distributed educational grants in the amount of $47,022
