Empower the bluegrass to create a sustainable environment.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Bluegrass PRIDE provides resources and education to community groups and citizens throughout Central Kentucky. Most of PRIDE's programs focus on energy efficiency, water quality and solid waste issues. Fiscal year 2010-2011 included the following successes: Live Green Lexington (LGL) Partner Program* Worked with 337 businesses to recycle 906 tons of material and 114 apartment complexes (over 16,000 units) to recycle 114 tons of material * Worked to increase public event recycling and 'Litter Free' events to 23 events in Lexington, 5 of which were zero waste events. * Enlisted 79 businesses and apartment complexes as Water Partners * Hosted the second annual Go Green, Save Green workshop for 100 apartment and business managers. *Enlisted 36 Businesses and 17 Apartment complexes as Energy Partners.* Created the Live Green Lexington Games for the City of Lexington and had 25 Businesses enlist. *Help create the Food Waste Pilot Program for the Southland Drive are residents and businesses, and have 60 residential homes and 2 Businesses signed up to participate.* Cell Phone Recycling Placed Eco-Cell boxes in 16 of the 18 counties in PRIDE's service area*Litter Abatement Distributed 42 boxes of trash bags and 28 boxes of gloves for area litter cleanups * Sent warning letters to 911 litter bugs *Coordinated four litter cleanups for apartments and businesses, Coordinated cleanups at Benson Creek in Franklin County, Fort Boonesboro State Park in Madison County and Park Hills Shopping Center in Fayette County * Developed hazardous materials flyer to promote volunteer safety at cleanups. * Public Relations * Incorporated social media into outreach strategy, including a Facebook page (2,091 Friends) and a Twitter (909 followers) account * Distributed press releases throughout the service area and received 100 media hits from various counties* Volunteers Recruited 52 new volunteers * Received 249 hours of volunteer work on cleanups, school outreach and community outreach programs* Energy Worked with 14 volunteers to weatherize 200 apartment units * Provided outreach and information to 2,085 people * Energy audit kits checked out 38 times * Enlisted 36 businesses and 17 apartment complex as Energy Partners * Awarded over $200,000 in grant funding to arts nonprofits for energy efficient retrofits. Fiscal year 2010-2011 included the following successes: Live Green Lexington Partner Schools, Waste Reduction * Worked with 112 K-12 schools, preschools, daycare facilities, and community youth organizations in Fayette County to start or expand recycling programs while conducting 1,132s activities with almost 45,000 students to promote recycling and waste reduction * Performed 63 waste audits (Dumpster Dives) * Conducted 187 litter abatement activities for 4,053 students, 32 Great American Cleanup events for 650 students, and 96 composting activities for 1592students* Live Green Lexington Partner Schools, Water Quality *Worked with 68 K-12 schools, preschools, daycare facilities, and community youth organizations to conduct 828 activities for 18,500 students * Led 28 water quality improvement projects with 512 students * Resource Library Bluegrass PRIDE's resource library is available to assist in the teaching of environmental topics. PRIDE has developed topic-related buckets that may include books, activities, interactive CDs, videos, websites to be used with the topic, human resources, field trip ideas and other resources * Buckets were checked out 98 times and used by almost 9,100 students * ARC Water Education (Clark, Estill, Garrard, Lincoln, Madison, Montgomery, Nicholas and Powell Counties)* Led 491 water education activities with 11,879 students, completed 36 service projects with 1,147 students and conducted professional development for 21 teachers PRIDE also participated in 18 community outreach education events for 1,994 participants. Jessamine County -Walmart Grant: PRIDE purchased and distributed classroom bins for recycling and rolling carts for 9 schools in Jessamine County. Nine dumpster dives were conducted for 3,764 students. Other Education* PRIDE staff conducted 211 activities for 5,175 students in counties not covered by grants or contracts. Bluegrass PRIDE awarded 8 environmental education grants and 3 educator workshop grants which will further environmental education in 7 counties.
