Mission and Program Overview

Major Activities

Activity 2
Orchestral Training: NWS offers postgraduate fellowships for 86 positions - violin (26), viola (10), cello (9), bass (7), flute (3), oboe (3), clarinet (3), bassoon (3), horn (5), trumpet (3), trombone (2), bass trombone (1), tuba (1), timpani (1), percussion (4), harp (1), piano (1), conducting (1), audio engineering (1), and library (1). In a highly competitive process, approximately 30 gifted young musicians are selected annually from 1,200 applicants to participate in NWS' postgraduate fellowship program. NWS Fellows are music graduates from top universities and conservatories, meeting NWS' undergraduate degree requirement at a minimum, although many hold postgraduate degrees in music. NWS Fellowships are awarded on a season-to-season basis for up to three seasons, and the package of benefits includes a weekly stipend; a grant for relocation assistance; instrument loans; and free private accommodations at furnished apartments in nearby NWS-owned facilities. NWS' advanced professional development program helps Fellows to further cultivate the full complement of skills and qualifications required of successful 21st century musicians. During the 2011-12 Season, 25 NWS Fellows won orchestral positions in such institutions as the St. Louis, Charleston, Ft. Worth, Detroit, Bergen (Norway) and Richmond symphonies, and the Kennedy Center Opera House, New York City Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, and Manchester Camerata Chamber orchestras. Additionally, this past season saw 10 NWS alumni win new positions. For the past five years, a seasonal average of 24 Fellows have won jobs in orchestras and ensembles worldwide. Having risen from an average of 15 in 2000, this metric is especially impressive given the recession-driven reduction in the number of job openings in professional ensembles.
Activity 3
Audience Development and Community Engagement: The artistic and educational activities associated with the professional development aspect of NWS' fellowship program are complemented with comprehensive community engagement initiatives, which serve a dual purpose in meeting the organization's mission: 1) To enrich the cultural vitality of the community by introducing nontraditional audiences to classical music and fostering appreciation and understanding of this art form among our patrons; 2) To promote community involvement and leadership among NWS Fellows and help them become effective and enthusiastic advocates for classical music in the communities in which they secure professional positions. NWS is proud to offer several programs tailored for students. Each year NWS Fellows gain invaluable experience teaching, coaching, and performing for students in the community through a variety of initiatives including private lessons, intimate in-classroom presentations, an educational daytime concert series and webcast, a side-by-side and concerto competition, an adult lecture series, and rehearsal observations. In the 2011-2012 school year, over 15,000 students participated in NWS programs, the majority of whom were students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Children's programming includes: - Education Concerts: The NWS Education concerts are designed to be an inspirational, educational experience outside the classroom for grades 6-12. These thematic daytime concerts will introduce major orchestral works and composers to students and teachers from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. A study guide is sent to all participating classes and round-trip bus transportation is provided free of charge. - Side-By-Side Ensemble: New World Symphony is pleased to offer advanced young instrumentalists grades 7 through 12 an opportunity to perform in the Side by Side Ensemble concert, where they will be play alongside NWS fellows, developing a musical working relationship as they prepare and perform orchestral works of the highest caliber. - MusicLab: Introduced during the 2009-10 season, MusicLab is changing the way students in Miami-Dade County experience music education. Now operating in four Miami-Dade County public schools, this 26-week residency program brings the expertise of NWS Fellows directly into the classroom, giving students a hands-on experience in the field of music performance, alongside a variety of supportive activities for personal enrichment. The New World Symphony believes that the orchestra musician of the 21st century needs not only extraordinary performance training, but also the ability to contribute to the society at large as an advocate, educator and mentor. These programs exemplify imaginative and engaging curricula while offering the Fellows a real-life experience of involvement within an extended community.

IRS990/Description0Artistic Programming: A unique laboratory for musical expression, the New World Symphony (NWS) is shaping the future of classical music performance and presentation using the advanced technologies of its new campus, the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center. NWS challenges the traditional concert scenario, creating new audiences by breaking down barriers to classical music, and generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented, and experienced. While preparing highly-gifted graduates of distinguished music programs for leadership roles in orchestras and ensembles around the world, NWS has become an international cultural hub where ideas about music, architecture, and art intersect. NWS is dedicated to the artistic, personal, and professional development of outstanding instrumentalists. This Fellowship program provides gifted young musicians with intensive post-graduate training, modeled after the demands of a professional orchestra. Fellows have the opportunity to enhance their education with the finest professional preparation through a wide range of performance and instructional activities. Under the artistic direction of NWS Founder Michael Tilson Thomas, NWS Fellows and nearly 80,000 residents and tourists in this region enjoy in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, with the active involvement of leading guest conductors, soloists, and coaches. The relationships with these artists are extended through NWS' pioneering experimentation with distance learning via Internet2. Co-founded in 1987 by Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Arison, the New World Symphony is celebrating its 25th Anniversary having launched the careers of more than 800 musicians. In North America, they are members of such ensembles as the Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony in Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. Their placement in foreign orchestras includes symphonies and chamber orchestras in Germany, China, Hong Kong, France, and Spain. In addition, many NWS musicians have chosen career paths in chamber music, music education, and arts management. New World Symphony's fellowship program consists of an immersive curriculum of instructional and performance activities designed to expand the musical and professional horizons of NWS Fellows beyond music school and conservatory training. Over the course of the 35-week season, a visiting faculty of more than 150 artists and professionals in the field offer master classes, coaching, and private lessons, as well as advanced classes specializing in topics such as Audition Training and Performance Psychology, Performance Opportunities, and training in Communications and Community Engagement. The development training and professional insight offered to NWS Fellows culminates in weekly concert presentations, offering South Florida audiences access to diverse repertoire in an array of performance formats. The Greater Miami community benefits from some 80 concert and educational events, ranging from full orchestra performances to lectures by NWS Fellows on a variety of topics. Over 25% of all NWS programming is offered free to the public, and thousands of residents and tourists enjoy attending NWS WALLCAST performances in Miami Beach's SoundScape. Since its inaugural concert on February 4, 1988, the New World Symphony has been heard in such prestigious venues as New York's Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, London's Barbican Centre, Paris' Bastille Opera and Argentina's Teatro Colon. NWS has made seven recordings to date. Most recently, as part of its Great Performances series, PBS aired The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater on March 29, 2012. This special performance was recorded in April 2011 at the New World Center and features Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the NWS. In 2011, the New World Symphony moved from the historic Lincoln Theatre into the New World Center, a c
