Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The amazon conservation team (act) partners with indigenous and other local communities to protect tropical forests and strengthen traditional culture.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Culture: In Colombia, at the ACT-supported Yachaicuri Ethno-Education School of the Colombian department of Caqueta, the students learn first-hand the sustainable farming techniques that allow them to grow their own food, contribute to the food resources of the surrounding communities, and provide an economic base for their institution. In Colombia, for the Inga and Coreguaje indigenous communities of the department of Caqueta, ACT continued to fully fund the operations of two indigenous-run radio stations that broadcast 40 hours of community programming weekly. In Colombia, in the Colombian department of La Guajira, as part of a long-term project managed by the Kogi indigenous people seeking a land use and environmental management proposal for coastal territory stretching from the Tayrona National Park to the settlement of Camarones, ACT provided funding for purchase of the most desired sacred site, where a cultural and ecological preservation center will be constructed. In Suriname, ACT continued to fund the operations of the traditional schools it established in the remote indigenous villages of Kwamalasamutu, Tepu and Sipaliwini and paid teacher stipends. In Suriname, in the remote interior village of Tepu, ACT provided training for a group of Trio indigenous women engaged in a sustainable income generation project focusing on pepper merchandizing. ACT provided guidance in cultivation, compost-making processing, proper weighing, and financial administration.
Activity 3
Health: In Colombia, ACT continued to provide direct support for six indigenous healers and three healers' apprentices of five tribes of the eastern Colombian Andes, allowing them to focus their energies on the restoration of traditional medicinal practices in their communities rather than on personal income-generating activities. ACT also continued to provide indirect support to 40 additional shamans and apprentices and 40 women healers of these tribes. In Colombia, ACT continued to assist a union of more than 60 women healers and their apprentices of four tribes of the Colombian Eastern Andean Amazon to meet annually to review progress made in preserving aspects of their medical and cultural knowledge, in advancing their handicraft production and sustainable agricultural projects, and in providing support to those of their membership in great poverty. Additionally, ACT continues to fund the maintenance of the women's meeting center and its adjoining sustainable aquaculture and poultry farms and traditional, organic gardens while providing technical advice training. This support strengthens the health and traditional cultural basis of at least 350 indigenous families. In Suriname, ACT continued to provide all necessary operational supplies for ACT-constructed traditional medicine clinics in the remote indigenous villages of Kwamalasamutu, Tepu, and Apetina and the Aucaner Maroon village of Gonini Mofo as well as a hospital facility in Kwamalasamutu for longer stays and intergenerational teaching opportunities.

IRS990/Description0Biodiversity: In Colombia, ACT provided ongoing technical assistance, onsite oversight and training in sustainable agriculture for five indigenous tribes and farming communities located in and around the borderlands of the Alto Fragua Indi Wasi National Park, with a focus on cacao agroforestry plots, organic gardens, plant nurseries, and seed banks. ACT is assisting the cacao farmers to bring their product to the European chocolate market. In Suriname, ACT provided continuous assistance and guidance to the work of indigenous park guards active in the remote interior villages of Kwamalasamutu, Tepu, Sipaliwini, and Apetina. ACT also enabled the continuous training of the indigenous park guard groups of Kwamalasamutu and Apetina in computer skills toward environmental monitoring and reporting capacity. In Suriname, in the remote interior village of Kwamalasamutu, ACT provided training in the use of GPS devices to provide technical support to the solution of an ongoing leafcutter ant infestation problem, while also providing instruction in the use of traditional methods to combat the ants. ACT also guided local farmers, clinic personnel and indigenous park guards in establishing an action plan for the monitoring and control of leafcutter ants on village agricultural plots. In Suriname, ACT facilitated a workshop on social cartography for the Surinamese government and the nation's indigenous and Maroon tribes as a conflict resolution step toward the resolving of land rights recognition issues. Focal areas were management of threats and opportunities; creating a pathway for development; and community development through conservation solutions. In Suriname, ACT facilitated negotiations between indigenous park guards from the village of Apetina and the government commission regulating the gold mining sector regarding control of unlicensed Apetina-area gold mining, and helped prepare a Memorandum of Understanding between these parties. In Suriname, ACT helped the Trio indigenous people of the rainforest community of Tepu in the Suriname rainforest interior to produce the land cover maps they need to sustainably manage their ecosystem and prevent its degradation. ACT staff worked with the Trio to collect and integrate on-the-ground data and remote sensing imagery to produce the maps, which will be used to develop a plan for sustainable use of the area surrounding Tepu.
