Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The amazon conservation team (act) partners with indigenous and other local communities to protect tropical forests and strengthen traditional culture.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Culture: at the act-supported yachaicuri ethno-education school of the colombian department of caqueta, the students learn first-hand the sustainable farming techniques that allow them to grow their own food, contribute to the food resources of the surrounding communities, and provide an economic base for their institution. Act provided support and technical assistance leading to the approval of public financial resources for the inga community to continue providing intercultural education in 2011. In colombia, for the inga and coreguaje indigenous communities of the department of caqueta, act continued to fully fund the operations of two indigenous-run radio stations that broadcast 40 hours of community programming weekly. Act provided ongoing technical assistance, onsite oversight and training in sustainable agriculture for indigenous (siona, inga, kametza, kofan, coreguaje) and peasant communities located in and around the borderlands of colombia's alto fragua indi wasi national park, with a focus on the installation and maintenance of cacao agroforestry plots, organic family gardens and plant nurseries and the creation of seed banks. Act now is assisting the cacao farmers to enter discussions with brokers for the european chocolate market. 72 land management plans were developed for campesino farms.in suriname, act continued to fund the operations of the traditional schools it established in the remote indigenous villages of kwamalasamutu, tepu and sipaliwini and paid teacher stipends. Act helped organize a first pan-stakeholder conference on land rights and demarcation in suriname's capital city. This conference's objective was to provide the nation's indigenous and maroon communities with information about demarcation processes in south america in a transparent setting with sufficient opportunity for all to speak and discuss the land rights issues. Representation of all ten tribes in suriname and government agencies as well as the participation of international experts from brazil and colombia was achieved. An action plan timeline toward demarcation was produced for the short, medium and long term.
Activity 3
Health: act continued to provide direct support for six indigenous healers and three healers' apprentices of five tribes of the eastern colombian andes, allowing them to focus their energies on the restoration of traditional medicinal practices in their communities rather than on personal income-generating activities. Act also continued to provide indirect support to 40 additional shamans and apprentices and 40 women healers of these tribes. Act continued to assist a union of more than 60 women healers and their apprentices of four tribes of the colombian eastern andean amazon to meet annually to review progress made in preserving aspects of their medical and cultural knowledge, in advancing their handicraft production and sustainable agricultural projects, and in providing support to those of their membership in great poverty. Additionally, act continues to fund the maintenance of the women's meeting center and its adjoining sustainable aquaculture and poultry farms and traditional, organic gardens while providing technical advice training. This support strengthens the health and traditional cultural basis of at least 350 indigenous families. In colombia, act held meetings with the national parks service, the ministry of interior, and members of colombia's rio pure national park administrative unit to begin defining a policy for the protection of indigenous groups in voluntary isolation in the park area. Of note is that in the national development plan, thanks in part to act's work, a paragraph was included in reference to the need to develop a public policy for the protection of such groups. In suriname, with sponsorship from the iucn, act continued assisting the remote rainforest community of kwamalasamutu in the development of an immunity-boosting tea product for sustainable income generation. Act continued to provide training to the community team in plant propagation and cultivation, packaging, food safety, marketing, business planning, bookkeeping, and project administration. In suriname, act continued to provide all necessary operational supplies for act-constructed traditional medicine clinics in the remote indigenous villages of kwamalasamutu, tepu, and apetina and the aucaner maroon village of gonini mofo as well as a hospital facility in kwamalasamutu for longer stays and intergenerational teaching opportunities.

IRS990/Description0BIODIVERSITY: INVITED BY THE BRAZILIAN STATE OF PARA, AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE BRAZILIAN NATIONAL INDIGENOUS AFFAIRS AGENCY, ACT AND THE INDIGENOUS CULTURAL ASSISTANCE NGO KANINDE IMPLEMENTED AN ETHNO-ENVIRONMENTAL DIAGNOSTIC SURVEY FOR THE NHAMUNDA MAPUERA INDIGENOUS RESERVE OF THE WAI-WAI INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, HAND-IN-HAND WITH THE WAI-WAI INDIGENOUS ASSOCIATION. THE PROJECT'S OBJECTIVE HAS BEEN TO COLLECT ESSENTIAL INFORMATION REGARDING NATURAL RESOURCES, RESOURCE USE, THE SUSTAINABILITY OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND SOCIAL AND TRADITIONAL FEATURES OF THE RESERVE AS THE BASIS FOR LAND MANAGEMENT PLANNING. IN BRAZIL, ACT CONTINUED TO COLLABORATE WITH THE SURUI INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE CENTRAL AMAZON TO HELP THEM BETTER PROTECT THEIR HIGHLY BIODIVERSE LANDS AND MOVE THEIR GROUNDBREAKING SURUI CARBON PROJECT FORWARD. INCREASED LOGGING AND DEFORESTATION PRESSURES HAVE CONFRONTED THE SURUI IN THE RECENT CONTEXT, OCCASIONED TO SOME DEGREE BY THE INSTABILITIES IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY AND THE POTENTIAL CHANGES TO BRAZILIAN LAW REGARDING SET-ASIDES FOR FOREST CONSERVATION. ACT PROVIDED THE SURUI WITH VITAL RESOURCES NEEDED TO IMPLEMENT THEIR VIGILANCE PLAN IN 2011, ENABLING THEM TO SAFEGUARD THEIR FOREST HOME UNTIL REDD (CARBON CREDIT) PAYMENTS BECOME AVAILABLE. THROUGH THEIR CARBON PROJECT, THE SURUI ARE SETTING THE STANDARD FOR ALL FUTURE COMMUNITY REDD PROJECTS IN BRAZIL AS ARTICULATED BY THE BRAZILIAN NATIONAL INDIGENOUS AFFAIRS AGENCY AND THE BRAZILIAN MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT. IN 2011, ACT AND KANINDE HELPED THE SURUI INDIGENOUS PEOPLE COMPLETE A TERRITORIAL PROTECTION PLAN FOR THEIR 612,000-ACRE RESERVE FOLLOWING A FULL YEAR OF DEVELOPMENT BASED ON A SERIES OF DIAGNOSTIC SURVEYS CONDUCTED. IN BRAZIL, ACT ENABLED INDIGENOUS ENVIRONMENTAL AGENTS OF THE SURUI PEOPLE TO PLAN AND IMPLEMENT FOUR VIGILANCE EXPEDITIONS SO THAT THEY COULD DETECT AND RESPOND TO THREATS IN AND AROUND THEIR 612,000-ACRE RESERVE IN A TIMELY FASHION. THE EXPEDITIONS WERE CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT'S NATIONAL INDIGENOUS AFFAIRS AGENCY ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE LIMITS OF THEIR 612,000-ACRE RESERVE. DURING THESE EXPEDITIONS, THE GUARDS IDENTIFIED RENEWED LOGGING IN ONE OF THEIR VILLAGE AREAS; BRINGING THIS ACTIVITY TO A HALT HAS BEEN THE FOCAL POINT OF THE SURUI TEAM'S RECENT EFFORTS. IN BRAZIL, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KANINDE, ACT HELPED THE JIAHUI INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF AMAZONAS STATE DRAFT A MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THEIR LANDS BASED ON DETAILED ETHNO-ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEYS. IN BRAZIL, IN PARA STATE, ACT PARTNERED WITH A RANGE OF PROMINENT BRAZILIAN STATE INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL ENFORCEMENT AGENCY, TO CONDUCT AN EIGHTH STATE INSTITUTIONAL PARK GUARD TRAINING COURSE, BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF REPRESENTATIVES OF A WIDE VARIETY OF AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP MONITOR PROTECTED AREAS. IN BRAZIL, TO HELP POSITION COMMUNITIES OF THE TEN-MILLION-ACRE TUMUCUMAQUE INDIGENOUS RESERVE TO OBTAIN SUSTAINABLE FINANCING THROUGH CURRENT AND FUTURE MECHANISMS FOR CARBON CREDITS AND PAYMENTS FOR ECOLOGICAL SERVICES, ACT HELPED THE CONSERVATION STRATEGY FUND PRODUCE A FULL ANALYSIS OF THE COST OF PROTECTING THE RESERVE, AND-AS PART OF MANAGEMENT PLAN DEVELOPMENT-CONDUCTED AN ANALYSIS OF COMMUNITY INCOME FROM FOREST AND OUTSIDE SOURCES. ACT IS HELPING THE TRIO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE RAINFOREST COMMUNITY OF KWAMALASAMUTU IN THE SURINAME RAINFOREST INTERIOR TO PRODUCE THE LAND COVER MAPS THEY NEED TO SUSTAINABLY MANAGE THEIR HIGHLY BIODIVERSE ECOSYSTEM, PREVENT ITS DEGRADATION, AND ENSURE ITS LONG-TERM HEALTH AND VITALITY. ACT STAFF IS WORKING WITH THE TRIO TO COLLECT AND INTEGRATE ON-THE-GROUND DATA AND REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY TO PRODUCE THE MAPS AND TO USE THESE MAPS TO ACCURATELY ASSESS THE HEALTH OF THE RAINFOREST AS COMPARED WITH A PAST BASELINE, ANALYZE THE FUTURE TRAJECTORY OF THE FOREST'S HEALTH, AND DEVELOP A PLAN FOR SUSTAINABLE USE OF THE AREA SURROUNDING KWAMALASAMUTU.
