Pai champions policies that make it possible for women to exercise their reproductive rights, and fights to remove the policy barriers between women and the care they need. We work with policymakers in washington and our network of partners in developing countries to advance women's reproductive rights.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- The integration partnershipthe goal of the integration partnership (tip) is to increase country demand for fp/rh and maternal, newborn and child health (mnch) integration within influential global institutions like the global fund for aids, tb, and malaria and the united states' pepfar and ghi programs. The partnership is taking place in six sub-saharan african countries: burkina faso, ethiopia, kenya, nigeria, tanzania and zambia. In 2011 pai awarded $768,818 in subgrants to partners as part of this work, with the vast majority going to partners in africa. Pai is also supporting country-level partners to advocate for integration in dialogues about national resource mobilization since many countries have thus far been largely reliant on external donors like the global fund. Leading this effort, pai, collaborates with partners friends of the global fund africa and family care international, to advocate for integration at the global level and provide technical support and guidance to country-level advocacy efforts to leverage funding for integrated programs. Specific accomplishments for 2011 include:- established a coalition of cso partners for unified and coordinated action to advance rh/hiv and mnch/atm integration in the six project focus countries. - global fund's round 11 information note on mnch includes pai promoted fp/rh components. - global fund's 2012-2016 strategy framework includes pai promoted rh/hiv and mnch/atm integration. - advanced rh/hiv integration with pepfar/ghi coordinators and influential partners.- advanced integration within country coordinating mechanism processes.
- Activity 3
- Advocacy for international population & reproductive health policyin 2011, pai helped lead the effort to minimize funding cuts and harmful policy changes to u.s. Assistance for international fp/rh, while working to restore the momentum behind reaching the $1 billion goal. Examples of recent efforts to strengthen and defend the u.s. Commitment to international fp/rh include: - pai met extensively with congressional and executive branch staff, making over 1,050 individual advocacy contacts in 2011 alone (visits, phone calls, or emails). Topics ranged from the global gag rule to protecting unfpa to global climate change and more. Strategies ranged from hosting briefings (such as one with oxfam, care and uscan ahead of the climate change negotiations in durban, south africa and which featured pai's film, weathering change) to orchestrating sign-on letters (such as one done in collaboration with senator boxer's office to the senate appropriations committee in support of the presiden's budget request for fp/rh; 17 senators signed-on).- via three in-district events, pai drummed up constituent support in key congressional districts (miami and pittsburgh) via a "grasstops" effort that included influential leaders from the advocacy, academic and business communities as well as local partners from the east florida chapter of the u.s. National committee for un women and usglc (miami) and the women and girls foundation (pittsburgh). Two of the miami event attendees in their capacity as volunteer advocates for care, wrote an op-ed entitled "family planning saves lives" that appeared in the miami herald. - pai provided ongoing leadership to the international family planning coalition (ifpc) by serving as its secretariat, hosting monthly; pai's vice president for communications continued to spearhead the ifpc's communicators working group (comprised of senior communications staff from 22 ifpc member groups), commissioning a polling memo, a map of the blogosphere, a research initiative to look at fp/rh messaging in the new political landscape as well as in the context of the 7 billion milestone, and other critical efforts. - pai has continued working to ensure that fp/rh are included in president obama's global health initiative and pepfar hiv/aids prevention efforts by engaging with the staff of the u.s. Agency for international (usaid), particularly those in the office of population and reproductive health; the department of state, specifically the bureau of population, refugees, and migration and to a lesser extent, the office of global women's issues; and the office of management and budget. - pai published and widely distributed washington memos, a resource for domestic and international partners and other stakeholders in understanding the policy and funding environment in washington. Pai also produced and widely distributed a series of short, advocacy oriented publications intended to help researchers and advocates promote fp/rh issues and policies in washington and abroad. In an ever-shifting and complex policy landscape, pai's partners value both these real-time analyses and in-depth looks at the latest developments vis-a-vis population, family planning and reproductive health.
