Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Pai champions policies that make it possible for women to exercise their reproductive rights, and fights to remove the policy barriers between women and the care they need. We work with policymakers in washington and our network of partners in developing countries to advance women's reproductive rights.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Climate change initiativethroughout 2012 and in early 2013, pai was instrumental to both the quantum leap forward in the global recognition of how population, women, family planning and reproductive health intersect, as well as in the significant gains in moving this awareness to action in key countries. Pai worked with 11 partners in 6 countries over the past year to raise the visibility of gender empowerment and climate resilience. We held high-level meetings with policy makers in bangladesh, malawi and the philippines who were receptive to implementing policy and program innovations supported by the evidence garnered by pai and our partners. Pai leveraged our coalition engagement to influence international processes such as rio+20, multilateral climate funding opportunities, and usaid decision-making.pai continues to play a valuable role as a convener and advocacy innovator at the nexus of a diverse set of key organizations.
Activity 3
Advocacy for international population and reproductive health one of pai's most marked skills is as a well-respected and highly successful operative in washington, d.c. On behalf of u.s. Assistance for international fp/rh. Pai has helped lead the effort to minimize funding cuts and harmful policy changes, while working to restore the momentum behind reaching the $1 billion goal. Examples of recent efforts to strengthen and defend the u.s. Commitment to international fp/rh include: 1. Pai met extensively with congressional and executive branch staff on topics ranging from the global gag rule to protecting unfpa to global climate change and more. 2. Pai hosted a congressional study tour to guatemala in february 2012. The trip highlighted how the u.s. Global health initiative (ghi) is being implemented in the field, and included visits to health facilities in urban and rural areas, with national and community organizations, and with a range of guatemalan policymakers, health care workers, ngo leaders, and u.s. Embassy and usaid mission officials. Staff from the offices of senators franken, kirk, and blumenthal participated. In-country hosting partner organizations included pasmo (pan american social marketing organization) and aprofam, a health service provider with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health. 3. Via three in-district events, pai drummed up constituent support in key congressional districts via a "grasstops" effort that included influential leaders from the advocacy, academic and business communities as well as local partners. 4. Pai provided ongoing leadership to the international family planning coalition (ifpc) by serving as its secretariat, hosting monthly meetings and the annual strategic advance in february 2012; pai continued to spearhead the ifpc's communicators working group, commissioning a polling memo, a map of the blogosphere, a research initiative to look at fp/rh messaging in the new political landscape as well as in the context of the 7 billion milestone, and other critical efforts. 5. Pai has continued working to ensure that fp/rh are included in president obama's global health initiative and pepfar hiv/aids prevention efforts by engaging with the staff of the u.s. Agency for international development(usaid), particularly those in the office of population and reproductive health; the department of state, specifically the bureau of population, refugees, and migration and to a lesser extent, the office of global women's issues; and the office of management and budget. 6. Pai published and widely distributed washington memos, a resource for domestic and international partners and other stakeholders in understanding the policy and funding environment in washington. Pai also produced and widely distributed a series of short, advocacy oriented publications intended to help researchers and advocates promote fp/rh issues and policies in washington and abroad.

IRS990/Description0THE INTEGRATION PARTNERSHIPTHE GOAL OF THE INTEGRATION PROJECT (TIP) WAS TO INCREASE COUNTRY DEMAND FOR RH/HIV INTEGRATION-INCLUDING PROVISION OF RH SUPPLIES-AS WELL AS THE PRIORITY AND RESOURCES DEDICATED TO RH/HIV INTEGRATION WITHIN INFLUENTIAL GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS. PAI BUILT ON ITS PRIOR STRATEGY BY PURSUING THREE OBJECTIVES:1. INCREASE PRIORITY OF RH/HIV INTEGRATION WITHIN THE GLOBAL FUND AND ITS SUPPORTING TECHNICAL AGENCIES IN POLICY, PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION, AND FUNDING ALLOCATION DECISIONS. THROUGH THIS APPROACH, PAI SECURED SUPPORT AND FAVORABLE DECISIONS FROM THE GLOBAL FUND SECRETARIAT, BOARD, RELEVANT COMMITTEES AND SUCH MULTILATERAL AGENCIES AS THE UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND (UNFPA) AND THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO). 2. INCREASE PRIORITY OF RH/HIV INTEGRATION WITHIN PEPFAR AND GHI POLICY, PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION, AND FUNDING ALLOCATION DECISIONS. THROUGH THIS APPROACH, PAI LEVERAGED EMERGING U.S. POLICY SUPPORT FOR INTEGRATED PROGRAMMING, AS EXPRESSED IN THE MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR GLOBAL HEALTH INITIATIVE (GHI). THROUGH THIS OBJECTIVE, PAI SECURED OGAC ALLOCATION OF FUNDS TO SUPPORT INTEGRATION, GAINED CLEAR SUPPORTIVE GUIDANCE, AND INCREASED INTEGRATED PROGRAMMING IN ANNUAL COUNTRY OPERATION PLANS FOR 2012.3. ACCELERATE DEMAND AND PROMOTE CIVIL SOCIETY INVOLVEMENT AND INFORMED DECISION-MAKING ABOUT RH/HIV INTEGRATION STRATEGIES. THIS APPROACH IS BUILT ON PAI'S COUNTRY LEVEL RELATIONSHIPS AND PRIOR EFFORTS. PAI ENGAGED FIVE COUNTRIES, FACILITATING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND THE PARTICIPATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN COUNTRY COORDINATING MECHANISMS (CCMS) IN WAYS THAT EFFECTIVELY PROMOTED INTEGRATED PROGRAMMING IN GLOBAL FUND PROPOSALS. IN ADDITION, PAI WORKED WITH IMPLEMENTERS IN THESE COUNTRIES TO COMMUNICATE VITAL ON-THE-GROUND PERSPECTIVES TO THOSE MAKING U.S. PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION DECISIONS AFFECTING RH/HIV INTEGRATION. THROUGH THIS OBJECTIVE, PAI INCREASED INTEGRATED PROGRAMMING REQUESTS IN GLOBAL FUND PROPOSALS AND PROVIDED STRATEGIC INFORMATION TO KEY U.S. POLICY DECISIONS PROCESSES.
