Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Pai champions policies that make it possible for women to exercise their reproductive rights, and fights to remove the policy barriers between women and the care they need. We work with policymakers in washington and our network of partners in developing countries to advance women's reproductive rights.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Advocacy program for international population and reproductive health policypai held numerous meetings with congressional offices on a wide range of issues related to international fp/rh funding and policy. Pai also worked closely with staff at usaid, particularly in the office of population and reproductive health; the department of state (bureau of population, refugees, and migration (prm) and to a lesser extent, the office of global women's issues (gwi) and office of management and budget (omb). -pai conducted outreach and helped to secure 78 signatures on a letter to chairwoman nita lowey (d-ny) of the state-foreign operations subcommittee urging her to include $1 billion for fp/rh in her bill. Similarly, pai contacted house offices and assisted in the collection of 91 signatures on a letter to chairwoman lowey urging her to include a permanent repeal of the global gag rule in her bill.-pai played an advisory role in a letter from pro-life democrats to president obama calling for increased funding for family planning in the fy2011 budget, which was signed by 9 offices. -pai conceived, proposed, and helped organize a member and staff briefing on the effects of demographic change on global security for the house government reform and oversight subcommittee on national security and foreign affairs in september 2010. -in april and december 2010, pai hosted semi-annual meetings of the u.s government-funded population and reproductive health cooperating agencies (cas), along with partner pathfinder. -pai published and widely distributed washington memos, a resource for domestic and international partners and other stakeholders in understanding the policy and funding environment in washington. -pai also continued its leadership of the international family planning coalition. -in april 2010, the pai team, accompanied by distinguished board member dr. Thomas lovejoy, keynote speaker, traveled to minneapolis for pai's very first "grasstops" event to cultivate support among leading constituents for u.s. Investments in fp/rh. The theme of the event was women at the center: climate change, food security and global health and it was co-sponsored by the institute for agriculture and trade policy (iatp). -president and ceo, suzanne ehlers was invited by the state department to serve as an official member of the u.s. Delegation to the un commission on population and development in 2010 and 2011. -pai co-hosted receptions in both new york and washington d.c. For the new unfpa executive director dr. Babatunde osotimehin, along with united nations foundation, the international women's health coalition and americans for unfpa. -pai in partnership with the white ribbon alliance, developed a thematic track around advocacy and activism for the june 2010 women deliver conference, hosting one panel and participating in three others. -at the u.n. Millennium development goals (mdg) summit held on september 22 in new york, pai was active in multiple events. Pai helped to organize a side event on population and climate change in partnership with the sierra club and the center for environment and population, advised the reproductive health supplies coalition on its "hand-to-hand" campaign, and participated in a reporter roundtable hosted by marie stopes international.-in 2010, pai released its 5th documentary, empty handed, at the global maternal health conference in new delhi, india. In may 2010, pai led a delegation of maternal health advocates and a youth delegation at the annual meeting of the rhsc, in kampala, uganda where pai unveiled both our maternal health case studies and empty handed. Next, pai traveled to zambia and facilitated a screening of the film at a media workshop for nearly 50 editors and reporters from tv, radio and print. The next day, empty handed was screened in a downtown commercial theater to an audience of more than 200 advocates and health care workers. Every attendant left with copies of the dvd and plans to show the film at
Activity 3
Research on key issues for reproductive health and population policypai worked to thoughtfully and strategically highlight population as one of the critical factors in reducing poverty and achieving balance between humanity and the natural environment-addressing the global shortage of reproductive and maternal health supplies pai began to explore how policies, funding, and other health system challenges affect the availability of maternal health supplies. Pai presented bangladesh and uganda case studies as part of a panel session titled, increasing and strengthening access, at the global maternal health conference in india, where over 500 maternal health experts from around the world gathered to disseminate new research, highlight programmatic successes and share advocacy opportunities. Pai has worked to build a solid base for maternal health (mh) supplies advocacy by facilitating linkages between the reproductive health supplies coalition (rhsc) and mh advocates; reflecting commitment to the issue of mh supplies in the statements of rhsc leadership; securing the placement of mh supplies on the agenda of two rhsc annual general meetings; and the designation of an initial institutional "home" for mh supplies within the rhsc. Pai convened key stakeholders to catalyze mh supplies advocacy, including through a watershed meeting of approximately 30 participants, co-sponsored by the maternal health task force on november 30, 2010 and featuring an address by julia bunting (chair of the rhsc), resulting in consensus that advocacy around mh supplies is both strategic and necessary.-building a u.s. Constituency for fp/rh and latin america: pai and carolina barco, colombian ambassador to the u.s., co-hosted the event the state of reproductive health in latin america at the colombian ambassador's residence in washington, dc. Influentials from philanthropy, civil society, think tanks, and the u.s. Government, including christiana figueres, newly-appointed executive secretary of united nations framework convention on climate change unfccc were in attendance. -tracking the money, monitoring the policies: in april of 2010, pai released "funding common ground: cost estimates for international reproductive health." pai's report is designed to help advocates and policymakers better understand the funding needed to achieve the icpd and mdg goals of universal access to reproductive health. The report was launched at a pai sponsored side session at the u.n. Commission on population and development (cpd).-demography and development: pai has published three in-depth country studies haiti, uganda and yemen. Pai also released an updated policy and issue brief summarizing new research findings on demographic trends and various challenges to development. Pai was invited to prepare a paper for a council on foreign relations study group on the topic of "strengthening u.s. Leadership on international reproductive health and family planning." a new white paper entitled, "perspectives on political and social regional stability impacted by global crisis - a social science context," was released by the army corps of engineers and the strategic multi-layer assessment with a chapter contributed by elizabeth leahy madsen on demographic security. Pai also contributed to a chapter, "age structure and development through a policy lens," to a textbook on political demography that will be published by palgrave macmillan later this year.-pai was invited to deliver presentations on demographic trends at the interpeace conference on youth and peace building in el salvador and to a group of officers at the u.s. Army war college. -the unfolding of the extraordinary events in tunisia, egypt and now libya shows the prescience of pai's work on demography and development, generating many recent interviews including those with npr.org, the ottawa citizen and the toronto star, as well as a huffington post piece.

IRS990/Description0CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVEIN YEAR THREE, PAI CONTINUED TO LEAD ON BUILDING THE EVIDENCE BASE FOR LINKAGES BETWEEN POPULATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE INCLUDING WORK ON MODELING, RESEARCH AND INTERACTIVE TOOLS SUCH AS OUR MAPPING PROJECT. FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVE, PAI HAS IDENTIFIED THE NEED FOR IPCC EMISSIONS SCENARIOS TO DO A BETTER JOB IN GETTING THE POPULATION ISSUE RIGHT. THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH THE JOINT GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, WE ARE BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE EXTENT TO WHICH CLIMATE CHANGE RESILIENCE CAN BE STRENGTHENED OVER TIME IN A SCENARIO WHEN UNMET NEED FOR FAMILY PLANNING IS MET - WHICH WE HOPE WILL ULTIMATELY INFORM IPCC'S NEXT ASSESSMENT REPORT IN 2014. OUR INTERACTIVE POPULATION AND CLIMATE MAPS ARE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ITEMS ON THE PAI WEBSITE. A LAUNCH OF THE MAPPING PROJECT IN LATE 2010 WITH NEW FEATURES CONFIRMED THAT OUR NGO ALLIES AND INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS VALUE THE MAPS AND ARE USING THEM, ESPECIALLY AT CONFERENCES BECAUSE THEY PROVIDE INFORMATION ON POPULATION-CLIMATE CHANGE RELATIONSHIPS IN SUCH A COMPELLING AND ACCESSIBLE MANNER. THIS YEAR, PAI IS ALSO INCLUDING MATERIALS IN TEACHING CURRICULA - INFORMING A NEW GENERATION OF CLIMATE AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ADVOCATES, FROM KATHLEEN MOGELGAARD TEACHING A COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND TO OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF THE INITIATIVE, ROGER-MARK DE SOUZA, INCORPORATING PAI MATERIALS INTO HIS LECTURES AT UC-BERKELEY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY COURSES AND BERKELEY'S ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. PAI IS ALSO BRINGING THE HUMAN FACE TO THE EVIDENCE BASE THROUGH FILM. THE FILMING INCLUDED COMPELLING NARRATIVES AND IMAGES OF WOMEN, HIGHLIGHTING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD THROUGH STORIES FROM THE FIELD IN ETHIOPIA, NEPAL AND PERU. A GLOBAL VERSION OF THE FILM, AS WELL AS COUNTRY VERSIONS, WILL BE RELEASED LATER THIS YEAR. PAI ALSO DELIVERED INTERNATIONAL ADVOCACY SUBGRANTS TO INFLUENCE UNFCCC AND NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE PROCESSES. PARTNERS IN ETHIOPIA, NEPAL, AND KENYA JOINED US AT THE UNFCCC 16TH CONFERENCE OF PARTIES IN CANCUN, WHERE THEY UNDERWENT BOOTCAMP TRAINING, REFINED COUNTRY ADVOCACY PLANS, AND NETWORKED WITH THEIR COUNTRY AND INTERNATIONAL COLLEAGUES. IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR, PAI'S SUB-GRANTEE IN MALAWI ORGANIZED A SYMPOSIUM TO BRING TOGETHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, NGO REPRESENTATIVES AND THE MEDIA WITH ROGER-MARK DE SOUZA TO EXPLORE THE EVIDENCE FOR POPULATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE LINKAGES AND TO IDENTIFY POLICY ENTRY POINTS. PAI'S CONTINUAL OUTREACH WITH BOTH REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITIES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF POPULATION-CLIMATE CHANGE LINKAGES IS BEARING FRUIT. THERE IS GREATER RECOGNITION THAT HAVING WOMEN, YOUTH, AND HEALTH SECTOR AT THE TABLE IS KEY TO REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS AND MAKING DECISIONS EQUITABLE. AN INDICATION OF THIS WAS PAI'S INSTRUMENTAL ROLE IN THE INSERTION FOR A SECOND TIME OF THE INTERNATIONAL FAMILY PLANNING $1 BILLION ASK IN THE GREEN BUDGET THROUGH BROAD AND DEEP PARTNERSHIPS THROUGHOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE GREEN GROUP. THIS YEAR WAS A BREAKTHROUGH YEAR IN CONNECTING WITH AND EDUCATING MAINSTREAM ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS. WE PROVIDED ADVICE TO KEY ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS (WITH BOTH A U.S. AND INTERNATIONAL SCOPE) ON POPULATION-CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES. WE ADVISED NRDC ON THEIR PLANS FOR GREATER INVOLVEMENT ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH-POPULATION. WE REGULARLY WORKED WITH THE SIERRA CLUB IN HELPING THEM REFINE THEIR OUTREACH AND THINKING OF THEIR POPULATION PROGRAM; WORKED WITH CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL AND THEIR COLLEAGUES THROUGH THE "BALANCED" PROJECT WHICH IS INCREASING UNDERSTANDING AND EVIDENCE AROUND THESE PROGRAMS INTERNATIONALLY; AND WE HELPED OTHER GROUPS SUCH AS THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE AND SECURITY PROGRAM MAKE THE CONNECTIONS TO OTHER SECTORS INCLUDING ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY AND OUTREACH TO THEIR KEY TARGET AUDIENCES. ADDITIONALLY, WE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH WWF TO HELP THEM INTEGRATE POPULA
