The ArtsCenter exists in order to inspire artistic creativity and to enrich the lives of people of all ages.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- The ArtsCenter's Concerts program served some 8,000 people in FY2012 with concerts in our intimate 355 seat theater. It's the ultimate up-close-and-personal experience. With 29 concerts produced by The ArtsCenter in FY2012, the program is driven by our mission to nourish the arts, creativity and community through education, performance and exhibition. For more than three decades, we have presented famed musicians along with traditional performers and leading singer-songwriters. The ArtsCenter aims to create a sense of community for the performers and their audiences. We also make our performance spaces available to outside presenters.

- The Schools & Family Programs department provides arts-based opportunities to over 20,000 youth and families in the Triangle region of NC through three main programs. The School Show Series presented 13 performances at The ArtsCenter for school groups in 2011-2012. These performances link with curriculum and explore diverse art forms and cultures. Additionally, we collaborated with local PTA volunteers to coordinate 68 in-school shows by visiting performers this year. The SuperFun Series presents shows for family audiences on the weekend and produced 7 performances this year. The ArtsCenter also makes arts learning opportunities available to youth in schools through direct contact with teaching artists from a variety of art disciplines. The Arts in Education program provided 9 hands-on arts integration residencies to over 400 area youth and reached approximately 60 area teachers and teaching artists through professional development workshops. Overall, the Schools and Family Programs department aims to provide programs of high artistic quality that are accessible to all, promote understanding, have educational merit, and strengthen community partnerships.

| IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 0 | ArtsCenter Stage Main Stage annually produces 4 productions in-house and presents approximately 20 different productions from outside organizations amounting to over 90 individual performances. Through our in-house productions each year, we provide opportunities for over 100 emerging and established actors, directors, designers and playwrights. This year ArtsCenter Stage produced 4 productions: the annual 10 By 10 Play Festival, One Flea Spare, the 9th Annual PlaySlam and For Lucy. Through varied annual presentations, we demonstrate our commitment to new local and national works as well as young artists. We present and promote the work of itinerant local performing arts companies demonstrating our commitment to showcase our local artistic community. This year, we presented the works of seven local theater companies, each employing their own artists and serving different audiences. Companies include Transactors Improv, The Monti, Sacrificial Poets, Carrboro Modern Dance Company, Playwrights Roundtable, Pauper Players, and OneSong Productions. We also presented work by Long Leaf Opera, Dirty South Improv, the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival, StreetSigns and Going Through a Stage. Each group serves audiences from across the Triangle and Triad areas of North Carolina. ArtsCenter Stage also presented the touring show of James Braley's Life in a Marital Institution. ArtsCenter Stage is a theater company which reflects the variety found in our community both in terms of audience and artists. |

In 2012 ArtsCamp offered 77 camps and employed 34 teaching artists who instructed campers, aged five to thirteen, in movement, drama, music, mask-making, puppetry, book making, ceramics, sewing, sculpture, painting, drawing, cartooning, and creative writing. A total of 586 campers attended, with the majority taking part in at least two programs. Additionally, in 2012 ArtsCamp's team of 80 teen counselors gained valuable work experience, and enjoyed arts enrichment, while earning 6,545 hours of community service. ArtsCamp provides the youth of our community age appropriate opportunities to explore, develop, and refine artistic expression while supporting artists, both established and emerging, who instruct and inspire campers and their families. |
| IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 2 | The new YOUTH ART CLASSES (YAC) program is composed of applied, visual, and fine art classes in a variety of disciplines (drawing, cartooning, painting, sewing, and more) and theatre classes from our Youth Performing Arts Conservatory. New classes are constantly being added to accomodate the various artistic interests of youth in our area. The Youth Performing Arts Conservatory (YPAC) was designed to offer students a well-rounded performing arts education. Students explore a huge range of performance styles and techniques - everything from acting to dance, chorus, improvisation, radio drama, on-camera acting and more. By collapsing YPAC into YAC, we are better able to offer participants a comprehensive arts experience. Youth Arts Classes employ approximately 70 teaching artists and serves approximately 425 student artists in grades k-12 each year. |

This unique program, in its 10th year, serves a maximum of 36 young artists in grades K-5 by providing instruction in art forms ranging from cartooning and puppetry, to hip hop dance, and moviemaking. Participants choose from full and part-time options. Homework assistance and supervised free play is also provided by a trained staff of 4 AAI assistants each day. |

The Center Gallery serves as a common area for patrons on their way to classes or performances and is located immediately inside the main entrance. Three months of the year, this gallery houses our annual Student Show, Instructor Show & Public Photo Contest. The remaining nine months are open to all applicants, and exhibits include a wide variety of artwork and installations from a diverse group of individual and/or collective artists. The smaller East End Gallery rotates exhibits for all 12 months of the year, is visible from the front of the building by glass walls, and is a space for artists with smaller collections. Each month, the 2nd Friday Artwalk brings hundreds of visitors into our galleries, exposing art lovers to the labors of both new & seasoned artists in a variety of disciplines and art forms. |

| IRS990/Description | 0 | The ArtsCenter's ArtSchool provides non-degree arts education to adults in a variety of disciplines. We offer beginning and advanced classes in drawing, painting, digital arts, writing, ceramics and sculpture, jewelry making and photography, as well as in applied arts, theatre, music, dance, health and healing arts and cuisine. Classes run year-round with three semesters: fall, winter/spring, and summer. The ArtSchool increases community participation in, and appreciation of the arts, encourages emerging artists, and employs a significant number of teaching-artists. The program serves not only the residents of Carrboro and Chapel Hill, but the greater Triangle area, including residents of Durham, Hillsborough, Pittsboro, Cary, Apex and Raleigh. We promote the development of emerging artists through our annual Student Art Exhibit, our annual Instructor Art Exhibit and our annual Community Photo Contest and Exhibit, as well as our scholarships to economically disadvantaged patrons. In the past year, we upgraded the Ceramics studio with new shelving, two new potter's wheels and a new kiln. The ArtSchool employed 87 teaching artists, provided 25 scholarships to low income adults, and offered over 550 classes in which approximately 2,400 students registered. |
