Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The ArtsCenter exists in order to inspire artistic creativity and to enrich the lives of people of all ages.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Schools & Family Programs department provides arts-based opportunities to over 20,000 youth and families in the Triangle region of NC through three main programs. The School Show Series presented 20 performances at The ArtsCenter for school groups in 2010-2011. These performances link with curriculum and explore diverse art forms and cultures. Additionally, we collaborated with local PTA volunteers to coordinate 74 in-school shows by visiting performers this year. The SuperFun Series presents shows for family audiences on the weekend and produced 10 performances this year and hosted two Baby Loves Disco toddler dance party events. The ArtsCenter also makes arts learning opportunities available to youth through direct contact with Teaching Artists. The Arts in Education program provided 10 hands-on arts integration residencies to over 450 area youth and 5 professional workshops to about 70 area teachers and Teaching Artists. Overall, the Schools and Family Programs department aims to provide programs of high artistic quality that are accessible to all, promote understanding, have educational merit, and strengthen community partnerships.
Activity 3
The Youth Performing Arts Conservatory (YPAC) began in September 2005 as an acting program for young people ages 6-17. It is a year-round performing arts program with classes in fall, spring and summer sessions. YPAC serves students from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Hillsborough and Pittsboro and stresses the education of actors through comprehensive classes in acting, musical theater, dance, improv, stage combat, Shakespeare, on-camera acting and more. In the summer of 2007, YPAC developed the Summer Youth Conservatory in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill's PlayMakers Repertory Company to run a summer program with classes for actors and theatre technicians resulting in a full-fledged production. In 2010, YPAC co-produced two full-length plays; one with student actors and student designers; the other with student actors working alongside adult actors and adult designers. In 2010, YPAC also formed a touring troupe, which performed throughout the local community and has expanded class offerings to include filmmaking and rock band classes. This year, YPAC employed 64 instructors, and offered over 50 classes in which over 380 students registered. Overall, YPAC provides a comprehensive understanding of the performing arts, exploration of a variety of performing arts techniques and participation in performance opportunities.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0The ArtsCenter is a not-for-profit arts-based organization that serves as a nucleus from which creativity emanates. By providing a broad spectrum of creative visual art experiences through exhibition, programming, outreach and events we pledge to unite diverse audiences through a continuum of art that is both: culturally rich, respective of long standing art traditions, and at the forefront of new trends, where art, education and performance intersect.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0The ArtsCenter's Concerts program has sold nearly 10,000 tickets annually for concerts in our intimate 355 seat theater over the past nine years. It's the ultimate up-close-and-personal experience. With an average of 55 concerts each year, the program is driven by our mission to nourish the arts, creativity and community through education, performance and exhibition. For more than three decades, we have presented the talents of Grammy-winning musicians such as Aimee Mann and Los Lonely Boys. Equally as significant, The ArtsCenter has showcased the cultural heritage of local and regional talent rarely heard in other places. By nourishing our local talent and showcasing national stars, The ArtsCenter creates a sense of community for the performers and their audiences.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1ArtsCenter Stage annually produces 5 in-house produced productions and presents approximately 20 different productions from outside organizations amounting to over 90 individual performances. Through our in-house productions each year, we provide opportunities for over 100 emerging and established actors, directors, designers and playwrights. We demonstrate our commitment to new works through our annual 10 By 10 Play Festival (an international festival of ten-minute plays featuring scripts submitted from all over the world), the PlaySlam (an evening of very short plays featuring local playwrights) and the Playwrights Roundtable (The ArtsCenter's resident playwrights laboratory). We demonstrate our commitment to young artists through our collaboration and co-productions with the Youth Performing Arts Conservatory, this year producing a holiday production featuring artists ages 10 to adult as well as an all-student production with student actors and designers. We present and promote the work of itinerant local performing arts companies demonstrating our commitment to showcase our local artistic community. This year, we partnered and presented the works of nine local theater companies, each employing their own artists and serving different audiences. Companies represented include Transactors Improv, in residence at The ArtsCenter for over 25 years and the oldest improv group in the southeast; Hidden Voices, which gives voice to under-represented people in our community; Paperhand Puppet Intervention, featuring professional puppeteers and musicians; and the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. Each group serves audiences from across the Triangle and Triad areas of North Carolina. Other groups include The Monti, a story-telling performance company; One Song Productions, a student-run production company; and the Sacrificial Poets, a poetry slam performance group. ArtsCenter Stage also presented touring shows from outside the Triangle community: Back to Borneo, The Bread and Puppet Theater, Justin Vivian Bond. This year ArtsCenter Stage produced or co-produced 5 productions: the annual 10 By 10 Play Festival, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Living Dead in Denmark, Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile and the 9th Annual PlaySlam. ArtsCenter Stage is a theater company which reflects the variety found in our community both in terms of audience and artists.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2As the area's only arts-based afterschool program, The ArtsCenter's AfterSchool Arts Immersion (AAI) program employs approximately 25 teaching artists per school year to conduct two-week residencies in a variety of art forms. This unique program, in its 10th year, serves a maximum of 36 young artists in grades K-5 by providing instruction in art forms ranging from cartooning and puppetry, to hip hop dance, and moviemaking. Homework assistance and supervised free play is also provided by a trained staff of 4 AAI assistants each day.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3Since 1982 The ArtsCenter has provided summer arts enrichment opportunities for children. In 2011 ArtsCamp offered 42 camps and employed 31 teaching artists who instructed campers, aged five to thirteen, in movement, drama, music, mask-making, puppetry, book making, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, cartooning, and creative writing. A total of 456 campers attended, with the majority taking part in at least two programs. Additionally, in 2011 ArtsCamp's team of 65 teen counselors gained valuable work experience, and enjoyed arts enrichment, while earning 4,998 hours of community service. ArtsCamp provides the youth of our community age appropriate opportunities to explore, develop, and refine artistic expression while supporting artists, both established and emerging, who instruct and inspire campers and their families.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description4The ArtsCenter's two galleries for art exhibition rotate exhibits monthly and are available free of admission to all who enter our doors. The Center Gallery serves as a common area for patrons on their way to classes or performances and is located immediately inside the main entrance. Three months of the year, this gallery houses our annual Student Show, Instructor Show & Public Photo Contest. The remaining nine months are open to all applicants, and exhibits include a wide variety of artwork and installations from a diverse group of individual and/or collective artists. The smaller East End Gallery rotates exhibits for all 12 months of the year, is visible from the front of the building by glass walls, and is a space for artists with smaller collections. Each month, the 2nd Friday Artwalk brings hundreds of visitors into our galleries, exposing art lovers to the labors of both new & seasoned artists in a variety of disciplines and art forms.

IRS990/Description0The ArtsCenter's ArtSchool provides non-degree arts education to adults and children in a variety of disciplines. We offer beginning and advanced classes in drawing, painting, digital arts, writing, ceramics and sculpture, jewelry making and photography, as well as in applied arts, theatre, music, dance, health and healing arts and cuisine. Classes run year-round with three semesters: fall, winter/spring, and summer. The ArtSchool increases community participation in, and appreciation of the arts, encourages emerging artists, and employs a significant number of teaching-artists. The program serves not only the residents of Carrboro and Chapel Hill, but the greater Triangle area, including residents of Durham, Hillsborough, Pittsboro, Cary, Apex and Raleigh. We promote the development of emerging artists through our annual Student Art Exhibit, our annual Instructor Art Exhibit and our annual Community Photo Contest and Exhibit, as well as our scholarships to economically disadvantaged patrons. In the past year, we remodeled our jewelry studio, and the ArtSchool employed 80 teaching artists and offered 538 classes, in which approximately 2,400 students registered.
